According to foreign media reports, an Indian company has developed a new type of battery that can fully charge electric vehicles (EVs) in 15 minutes, making electric vehicles affordable to end customers. The battery was developed by a startup called Gegadyne Energy in Mumbai, India. The company said it has applied for a patent for the battery and may be commercialized in 2020.
At present, battery costs account for 40% of the cost of electric vehicles. In order to make electric vehicles more accessible to end users, battery costs must be reduced while charging time must be reduced.
Currently, lithium-ion (Li) batteries are the main power source for electric vehicles. Since the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles just emerged in 2006, by 2016, the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles accounted for 50% of the global demand for lithium-ion batteries. However, such batteries take a long time to charge, which is not conducive to the promotion of electric vehicles. The Indian company has used a new technology that combines the fast charging capabilities of supercapacitors with the high energy density of traditional batteries, using the concepts of electrostatic charge storage and fast Faraday kinetic reactions.
Ameya Gadiwan, chief technology officer of Gegadyne Energy, said the purpose of studying the battery is to replace existing batteries, and the new battery will be available in cylindrical, soft pack and square forms.
In lithium-ion batteries, energy is stored in the form of electrochemistry, resulting in slow battery charging and short overall battery cycle life. In contrast, the new battery designed by researchers combines electrostatics and electrochemical processes to store energy, making the battery cycle life nearly 50 times longer than traditional batteries, with shorter charging time and faster charging speed.
"Currently, we are developing third-party verified battery prototypes and battery packs, and will start small-scale production in India in the next 12 months," said Gadiwan, also saying that the price range of the battery pack will be comparable to that of lithium-ion batteries. The company expects battery prices to fall further as production scales up. The company is mainly targeting the electric vehicle market, but its batteries can also be used in other consumer devices, telecommunications towers and fixed energy storage systems.
