Long term storage of lithium batteries may result in leakage, rust, and swelling; Improper operation may cause heating, combustion, or explosion, and the relevant handling methods are as follows:
Rust treatment method: Usually seen in cylindrical lithium batteries (polymer lithium batteries do not have this phenomenon), initial and slight rust will not affect the performance of lithium batteries and can be used normally. If the rust is severe (such as on the cap), it will affect the sealing performance of the battery and cause leakage, and it must be scrapped.
The treatment method for leakage or swelling: Leakage refers to the leakage of electrolyte from the battery, which usually has a pungent odor. The strong corrosiveness of the electrolyte will cause damage to the battery protection board components, such as polymer lithium batteries, which will cause swelling. Leaking and bulging batteries must be selected and scrapped.
Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, batteries will not produce mold or discoloration. If leakage occurs, such adverse phenomena will occur.
Heat treatment method: During charging and discharging (in use), it will generate heat, but the temperature is usually below 60 degrees. When the battery is in an internal or external short circuit state, the temperature can reach hundreds or even hundreds of degrees. At this time, the battery must be isolated and placed in sand. Be careful not to directly touch the battery with your hands, otherwise it will be burned. When the battery temperature drops to normal, dispose of it.
Combustion or explosion treatment method: If combustion or explosion occurs, it is very dangerous and personnel must stay away; Burning a battery does not produce an open flame, usually due to high temperatures igniting nearby flammable materials or packaging boxes. Under the premise of taking protective measures, such as single or very few batteries burning or exploding, the fire extinguishing method is to directly cover the burning or exploding battery with sand. If using dry powder fire extinguishers for large-scale combustion, it is strictly prohibited to use water to extinguish the fire, as water can cause battery short circuits.
