    Liaoning Power Grid Overcomes Technical Difficulties of CR2450 battery Energy Storage and Heat Storage

It actively promoted the "Blue Sky Project" and "Electrification Liaoning" work progress, and around the problem of clean energy consumption in Liaoning Power Grid, strengthened collaborative innovation and tackled key problems, actively built and put into operation a number of scientific and technological innovation demonstration projects, and the power grid's ability to accept clean energy continued to improve, promoting the realization of Liaoning's ecological and healthy development.

     

    Solve the problem of clean energy consumption

     

    Liaoning Power Grid is the load center of the Northeast Power Grid, with power installed capacity accounting for about 35% of the Northeast Power Grid and electricity consumption accounting for 50% of the Northeast region. From 2008 to 2012, Liaoning's wind power experienced an explosive growth, with an average annual growth rate of more than 100%. Influenced by factors such as the load increase being lower than expected, the minimum operation mode of thermal power, especially the addition of heating units, and the successive commissioning of nuclear power, Liaoning Power Grid began to have wind power abandonment problems in 2010, and the wind power absorption capacity continued to decline. The wind power abandonment problem became more and more obvious. By 2015, the wind power abandonment rate reached 14.60%, and the contradiction in wind power absorption was prominent.

     

    The problem of absorbing clean energy has begun to emerge. What measures should be taken? How to solve the problem? State Grid Liaoning Electric Power people began to embark on their road of scientific and technological innovation... In 2011, Liaoning Electric Power took the lead in undertaking the 863 plan "Research and Development of Key Technologies for Improving Intermittent Power Supply Access Capability of Energy Storage Systems", and proposed a wide-area coordinated control method for energy storage power stations, and built the then largest Woniushi all-vanadium liquid flow energy storage power station in the world. The completion and commissioning of this energy storage power station has improved the utilization efficiency of intermittent clean energy, and realized functions such as peak shaving and valley filling, and tracking wind power generation plans. At the same time, Liaoning Power Grid Provincial Dispatching developed a wind, fire, water and storage multi-source coordinated control system for the first time, realizing the networking dispatching and operation of the wind power storage system, and allowing the power grid to accept wind power output at its maximum capacity while ensuring the safety of the power grid. All these have created positive conditions for Liaoning to absorb clean energy at a high proportion. In view of the large proportion of wind power installed in the power grid, the decline in peak-shaving capacity during winter heating, which leads to difficulties in absorbing clean energy, and the phenomenon of "abandoning wind" and "abandoning nuclear power", Liaoning Power has strengthened collaborative innovation in technical directions such as power grid CR2450 battery energy storage, electric heating and heat storage, and deep peak-shaving of generator sets, and carried out a series of scientific research and technological breakthroughs.

     

    State Grid Liaoning Power has spared no effort to absorb clean energy. In Liaoning, the concept of "green water and green mountains are gold and silver mountains" has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, the energy consumption structure is undergoing positive changes, and the top-level design of ecological civilization and the construction of the system are accelerating. By strengthening scientific research support, combining industry, academia and research, the power grid regulation capacity has been continuously improved, and at the same time, the grid connection management has been strengthened to ensure the orderly development of wind power. Since 2016, the wind abandonment rate has declined year by year, and the absorption situation has improved significantly. As of June this year, Liaoning Power Grid had an installed capacity of 49.1695 million kilowatts of power generation, and 17.2647 million kilowatts of clean energy, accounting for 35.11% of the total capacity. In the first half of the year, Liaoning Power Grid had a total power generation of 91.569 billion kilowatt-hours, and clean energy power generation of 24.942 billion kilowatt-hours, accounting for 27.24%. The numbers are relatively simple and speechless, but the changes in Liaoning's ecological environment quality are obvious to all. Now, the mountains are greener and the water is clearer... Behind the numbers, Liaoning Power has injected inexhaustible power into the ecological development of the region.

     

    Strengthening support and guarantee for scientific and technological innovation

     

    "We track the development of cutting-edge technologies, combine Liaoning's regional characteristics, its own conditions and advantageous fields, accurately judge the direction of scientific research, and gradually establish a project cultivation system. At present, Liaoning has formed a multi-level and competitive project reserve in the fields of clean energy consumption and new material composite conductors." said a relevant person in charge of the Science and Technology Information and Communication Department of State Grid Liaoning Power.

     

    State Grid Liaoning Electric Power attaches great importance to scientific and technological innovation, conscientiously implements the national energy, science and technology development and State Grid Corporation of China's scientific and technological innovation strategy requirements, gathers superior resources to strive to carry out independent innovation and scientific and technological research, strengthens the application and implementation of national science and technology projects, and solves major technical problems in the power grid. They have established a scientific and technological innovation leadership group, which has an academic committee to coordinate existing R&D resources, strengthen scientific research layout and collaborative guidance, strengthen exchanges and cooperation with well-known scientific research institutes, and build a closely cooperative, collaborative, efficient and open scientific and technological innovation system. In recent years, the company has also continued to increase its investment in science and technology, invested in R&D funds year by year, and actively sought financial support from various national projects. At the same time, Liaoning Electric Power fully implemented the key deployment of the national scientific research field "delegation, regulation and service" reform, strengthened system construction, and studied and compiled relevant opinions on the implementation of scientific and technological achievements. Strengthening the construction of basic scientific research capabilities, as of now, it has two State Grid laboratories and one State Grid scientific and technological research team, as well as one provincial smart grid engineering technology research center, 10 provincial company-level scientific and technological research teams, and 5 provincial company-level laboratories, all of which have laid a solid foundation for the company to effectively improve the success rate of national science and technology project applications.

     

    It is understood that since 2011, Liaoning Power has achieved good results in three national projects and has passed the acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology. At present, it is leading three national projects, participating in two, and researching 61 State Grid Corporation-level scientific and technological projects. The number of national and State Grid Corporation-level scientific and technological projects undertaken ranks among the top provincial power grid companies in the country. In terms of clean energy consumption technology, it has successively taken the lead in undertaking three national projects, participated in one, and 12 State Grid Corporation-level scientific and technological projects, and has invested its own funds in as many as 14 scientific and technological projects.

     

    In-depth research

     

    Although Liaoning Power has made many scientific and technological innovation breakthroughs in the process of clean energy consumption, they are not satisfied. In addition to the construction of the Woniushi All-vanadium Liquid Flow Energy Storage Power Station mentioned above, in 2015, Liaoning Power took the lead in undertaking the national science and technology support plan "Key Technologies for High-voltage Electric Heating and Heat Storage to Improve Renewable Energy Consumption". In 2018, a phase change heat storage system with a voltage level of 10 kV, a total equipment power of 30 MW, and a heat storage capacity of 200 MWh was built in Dalian. In the first quarter of 2018 alone, the 8MW electric heat storage system in this clean energy heating demonstration project absorbed 1,134MWh of abandoned wind power. It is understood that after the 30MW demonstration project is fully put into operation, the use of coal can be reduced by 6,341 tons per year, with huge economic and social benefits. Liaoning Power also cooperated with relevant units to carry out the pilot transformation project of thermal power units of the National Energy Administration, and built the world's highest voltage level, largest capacity and lowest cost solid-state heat storage system at Diaobingshan Coal Gangue Thermal Power Plant and Dandong Jinshan Thermal Power Plant, with a capacity of 280MW and 260MW respectively, with the ability to absorb 400 million kWh of clean energy annually. Today, this technical achievement has been promoted in 11 provinces and cities across the country.

     

    A series of scientific research results have borne fruit in Liaoning. In 2017, State Grid Liaoning Electric Power once again took the lead in undertaking the national key R&D plan project "Regulation Capacity of Conventional/Heating Units and Comprehensive Coordinated Dispatching Technology of Electricity and Heat". By studying the low-load operation and rapid peak-shaving technology of thermal power units, the stable and automatic operation of the units under low load was achieved, providing more space for the consumption of renewable energy. Relying on major national scientific research projects, Liaoning Electric Power finally achieved a technical breakthrough. They built the only provincial power grid in China that integrates wind, light, water, fire, nuclear, biomass, CR2450 battery energy storage and heat storage technologies, with a high proportion of clean energy installed capacity and the largest electric heat storage capacity in China. At the same time, a full-dimensional multi-energy complementary consumption technology research and development system covering the entire field of source-grid-load was formed, which promoted the high proportion of clean energy consumption in Liaoning Power Grid. It is understood that under the premise of the rapid increase in wind power and photovoltaic installed capacity and nuclear power investment capacity in recent years, the wind power abandonment rate of Liaoning Power Grid has been declining year by year, from 14.60% in 2015 to 8.12% in 2017, and further dropped to 1.29% in the first half of 2018. The level of wind power utilization rate improvement is leading in the country. On the road of scientific and technological innovation, Liaoning Power has provided strong technical support for promoting the construction of a first-class domestic energy Internet company and better serving the comprehensive revitalization of Liaoning.
