Is hydrogen fuel cell technology really 14500 battery than the hydrogen internal combustion engine?

Although hydrogen energy and hydrogen fuel cells will play an important role in the future of transportation, even many hydrogen advocates admit that the internal combustion of hydrogen may not happen.

As recently as about 15 years ago, people did have great hopes for the idea of the hydrogen internal combustion engine, which basically ran an engine not much different from the gasoline engine in the first element shop of the periodic table.

BMW offered a version of the 2005-2007 BMW 7 Series called the Hydrogen 7, where the 6.0-liter V-12 could be powered by gasoline or hydrogen. It claimed that hydrogen fuel efficiency was about 40%, while most gasoline engines are much less efficient.

Mazda has been particularly active in this area and claims that its Wankel Rotary is particularly suitable for hydrogen because the engine design already tends to run cooler than traditional piston engines, thus reducing concerns about nitrogen oxide emissions. It first launched a dual-fuel version of the RX-8 that could switch between hydrogen and gasoline when needed, and then as part of a series hybrid system in the Prematy H2-RE.

Beyond sheer cost, there are significant barriers to making both hydrogen-powered vehicle models viable, as storing enough hydrogen to get a useful range is impractical and not enough for current technology. The Hydrogen-7 can only travel 125 miles on 17.6 pounds of hydrogen before the gasoline starts to burn. Today’s 2019 Hyundai Nexo fuel cell car, on the other hand, can travel 380 miles on 13.7 pounds of hydrogen.

In recent years, fuel cell vehicle technology has continued to advance, with conversion efficiencies exceeding 50 percent, meaning more than half of the hydrogen energy is used to power the vehicle. Hyundai, for example, has said that the fuel cell stack itself is up to 60 percent efficient on its Nexo.

Of course, storing hydrogen in a car remains a hurdle, so technology that improves the storage cost per ounce of hydrogen (i.e., fuel cells) could be the ultimate winner. For example, the Honda Clarity fuel cell uses 12.0 pounds of hydrogen to travel 366 miles, stored at 10,000 psi, and requires three separate cylindrical tanks to keep enough storage space (even so, the rear seat backs don't fold down).

In addition, hydrogen internal combustion does not solve the main problem of hydrogen, which is the transportation and distribution of hydrogen from sustainable sources. The range of hydrogen-powered vehicles has become another key obstacle due to the slow progress of hydrogen energy transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Usually holding a Ph.D., they have a good understanding of how energy and combustion work and the problems faced by fuel cells and hydrogen production.

At the beginning, fuel cells were bulky and expensive, and some R&D executives and engineers at major automakers believed that keeping the layout of internal combustion engines was a cheaper and profitable route that could be produced with existing car models, so these automakers first considered hydrogen internal combustion.

But from today's perspective, times have changed. Fuel cells have become smaller and smaller, with higher energy density, and are now about the size of a suitcase, and may become even smaller in the next generation.

In addition, hydrogen internal combustion engines still produce a certain amount of standard pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, which make this technology route not so green. So, so far, the hydrogen internal combustion route can basically be declared invalid. At the same time, as the number of electric vehicles and electric vehicles increases, fuel cells may increasingly play a role as part of the entire electric vehicle ecosystem; and may become a substitute in industrial applications or commercial vehicle applications, and may eventually become the optimal battery utilization method.
