cr2032 3v lithium battery become the industry's "new favorite" technology and cost may restrict industrial use
Cailianshe (Beijing, reporter Xu Hao) reported that in the past June, the frequent fire accidents of new energy vehicles echoed the industry's attention to cr2032 3v lithium battery with higher safety and energy density. Under this industry trend, traditional vehicle manufacturers including Volkswagen have further strengthened their layout in the field of cr2032 3v lithium battery.
"If all-cr2032 3v lithium battery are used, the range of the company's EV model e-Golf can be increased from the current 300 kilometers to 750 kilometers." After completing the $200 million capital increase in solid-state battery developer QuantumScape in mid-June this year, Volkswagen Group made such a prediction. In early June, Zhejiang Hezhong, one of the new car companies in China, also reached in-depth cooperation with Qingtao Energy to jointly promote the research and development and use of cr2032 3v lithium battery.
Although compared with the current mainstream ternary lithium-ion batteries in the market, cr2032 3v lithium battery have advantages such as high energy density, high safety performance, and high number of cycles, some industry insiders believe that it will take some time for cr2032 3v lithium battery to be used industrially.
"From the latest subsidy policy, the state has not made higher requirements for technical indicators such as energy density of power lithium-ion battery systems. The current new energy market is still policy-oriented, and companies do not have enough motivation to use more expensive cr2032 3v lithium battery." Industry expert Song Nan said.
Cross-border layout of cr2032 3v lithium battery
Prior to this, many multinational automakers have begun to layout the solid-state battery industry. In addition to the Volkswagen Group, which recently completed the capital increase of the solid-state battery research and development company and is preparing to build a solid-state battery processing line in 2025, BMW, Toyota, Daimler and other automakers have also completed corresponding strategic deployments. Among them, Toyota's Executive President and Chief Technology Officer Shigeki Terajima once revealed that Toyota will launch a new energy vehicle equipped with cr2032 3v lithium battery in 2020; and at the beginning of this year, Daimler announced that it will cooperate with Canada's Quebec Hydro to develop solid-state battery technology. Once it reaches mass production, it will be used in Daimler's electric vehicles.
Among domestic vehicle companies, BYD and BAIC, as two representative companies of new energy vehicles, have also taken action in the field of cr2032 3v lithium battery. BYD told reporters that "BYD already has technical reserves in cr2032 3v lithium battery, but the details are not yet available."
BAIC Capital, a subsidiary of BAIC Group, completed its investment in Qingtao (Kunshan) Energy Development Co., Ltd. in August 2019. The two parties will cooperate in the industrialization of solid-state lithium-ion batteries.
Another new car company that has reached cooperation with Qingtao Energy is Hozon Auto, which represents new car companies. "The two parties will take the promotion of solid-state power lithium-ion battery installation and use as the core principle, aiming to fully tap the technical potential of solid-state power lithium-ion batteries and accelerate the verification and detection of solid-state power lithium-ion batteries for whole vehicles." A relevant person in charge of Hozon Auto said, "Qingtao will be the only solid-state power lithium-ion battery partner of Hozon, and will provide Hozon with high-safety solid-state power lithium-ion battery processing methods."
In the upstream of the automotive industry chain, according to statistics from the China Economic Industry Research Institute, as many as 16 power lithium-ion battery companies, including CATL, Guoxuan High-tech, and Honeycomb Power, have started the research and development of cr2032 3v lithium battery.
"CATL's research directions are lithium-sulfur, lithium-air (lithium-air battery), all-solid-state and sodium-ion batteries." At the beginning of this year, Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL, revealed.
It will take some time for large-scale promotion
Although it is sought after by many international mainstream car companies, some companies have given up the research and development of cr2032 3v lithium battery.
At the end of 2017, Bosch considered investing 20 billion euros in the mass production plan of cr2032 3v lithium battery and acquiring Seeo Inc, a solid-state battery startup. It is expected to achieve a battery output of 200Gwh by 2030, but by March 2018, Bosch announced that it would abandon the solid-state battery research and development plan and sell Seeo Inc, which it had just acquired.
"Although solid electrolytes are superior to liquid electrolytes in safety and some electrochemical properties, they also have inherent defects due to their solid form. For example, the lithium ion migration efficiency of solid electrolytes directly affects the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes." A senior analyst at the institute said that the ionic conductivity of most solid electrolytes is currently lower than that of liquid electrolytes, which affects the practical performance of cr2032 3v lithium battery.
In addition to the reduced practicality caused by lower conductivity, the processing and manufacturing process also restricts the industrialization process of cr2032 3v lithium battery to a certain extent.
"At present, solid-state battery technology has made some breakthroughs in the laboratory stage, but there are still problems such as "yield" in mass production." Song Nan believes that the current solid-state battery technology has not yet reached the standard for large-scale mass production.
Wang Rongjin, partner of Shanghai Jinbang Capital, holds a similar view to Song Nan. In Wang Rongjin's view, it will take at least 6 years for cr2032 3v lithium battery to go from sample verification to SOP verification. In addition, cr2032 3v lithium battery are expected to be fully verified in the consumer electronics field before they can be used in electric vehicles. "2025 may be a key time point for the industrialization of cr2032 3v lithium battery." Wang Rongjin said.
Not only in terms of technology and process, for cr2032 3v lithium battery, promotion costs are also one of the factors considered by most companies at present.
"Although cr2032 3v lithium battery have higher energy density and safety, the cost is more than two or three times higher than the current liquid batteries. From the new subsidy policy, (the company) will not get more subsidies, but will increase costs." Song Nan said.
Data shows that the current cost of semi-solid batteries is about 2.5-3 yuan/wh, which is 2-3 times that of general power lithium-ion batteries. If the power lithium-ion battery, which accounts for nearly 40% of the vehicle cost, cannot control the cost, it will be difficult to meet consumers' demand for the price of the vehicle.
"At present, many car companies have given up the pursuit of battery energy density and turned to the development of lightweight vehicles to improve endurance." Song Nan further stated, "This will reduce the overall cost for relevant car companies."
