From the latest progress of 18650 lithium ion battery cell technology, what giants are involved in this field?
Recently, a 18650 lithium ion battery cell patent reported by foreign media has attracted the attention of battery manufacturers and electric vehicle manufacturers.
This 18650 lithium ion battery cell patent was applied for by electric car manufacturer Fisker this week - it can increase the range of electric vehicles to an astonishing 804 kilometers (500 miles), and the charging time is also reduced to just 1 minute. In terms of cost, due to advances in materials and manufacturing, its cost is only 1/3 of the estimated cost of conventional lithium-ion batteries in 2020.
Fisker plans to launch this new battery technology in January next year.
Fisker announced that they are applying for a new solid-state electrode structure, which enables the available battery solutions to have some incredible configurations.
Fisker's 18650 lithium ion battery cell will have a three-dimensional electrode with 2.5 times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. Fisker claims that this technology will enable a single-charge range of more than 500 kilometers and a charging time of only one minute.
Fisker's latest 18650 lithium ion battery cell project will be led by Dr. Fabio Albano, Fisker's vice president of battery systems and co-founder of Sakti3.
Dr. Fabio Albano said: "This breakthrough marks the beginning of a new era of solid-state materials and manufacturing technology. We are solving all the obstacles encountered in the commercialization path of solid-state batteries, such as performance in low-temperature environments; the use of low-cost and scalable manufacturing methods; and the creation of large-scale solid-state electrodes with significant thickness and high active material loading."
Regarding this 18650 lithium ion battery cell technology, Fisker said it will be automotive production grade around 2023.
Fisker also plans to launch the Emotion electric car in 2 months and show it at CES 2018.
Fisker is not the first company to dabble in solid-state batteries, and most companies have not yet put them into commercial use.
Solid-state batteries are considered to be much safer than ordinary lithium-ion batteries and have the potential for higher energy density. But this type of battery also has its limitations: such as temperature range, electrode current density, etc. At present, there are very few 18650 lithium ion battery cell manufacturers that can mass-produce them and ensure that the price is attractive enough to compete with lithium-ion batteries.
Researchers at MIT and Samsung have previously announced similar technologies. Recently, a team including John Goodenough, known as the father of lithium-ion batteries, also announced that they were developing solid-state batteries, which once again shifted people's attention back to solid-state batteries.
In general, the core of the research and development of all-solid-state batteries lies in the electrolyte material itself and the regulation and optimization of interface performance. Many studies and analyses show that solid-state batteries will become the future technology route for power batteries.
A report released by market research firm OrbisOrbisReseach in July this year, "Global Solid State Battery Market 2017-2021", conducted a SWOT analysis of major suppliers and also included a comprehensive market and supplier situation. The report predicts that the global 18650 lithium ion battery cell market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 72.33% during 2017-2021.
So, in the research and development competition of solid-state batteries, besides Fisker, what are the explorers who are ahead in this market?
At present, Toyota, Panasonic, Samsung, Mitsubishi, BMW, Hyundai, Dyson, CATL and other companies are stepping up the layout of 18650 lithium ion battery cell reserve research and development.
Relatively speaking, the companies with higher technical maturity and deeper technical accumulation are Bolloré of France, Sakti3 of the United States and Toyota of Japan. These three companies also represent the typical technical development directions of the three major solid electrolytes of polymer, oxide and sulfide.
Bolloré of France: The first commercialization of all-solid-state batteries
Bolloré's electric car "Bluecar" is equipped with a 30kwh lithium metal polymer battery (LMP) produced by its subsidiary Batscap using the Li-PEO-LFP material system. 2,900 of these electric vehicles have been put into use.
CATL of China: Has invested in the research and development of solid-state lithium metal batteries
CATL's solution to solid-state batteries is to protect the positive electrode materials to improve compatibility. At present, the lithium metal solid-state batteries made by CATL can last for more than 300 weeks, at 82%.
On November 10, CATL, which was founded only 6 years ago, disclosed its GEM prospectus on the official website of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, rushing for an IPO. On November 13, the first trading day after the disclosure of the application draft, CATL's "concept stocks" were born and soared. In this round of fundraising, CATL's market valuation has been at least 130 billion yuan.
Toyota: Developed a prototype of all-solid-state lithium-ion battery with an energy density of 400Wh/L
Toyota researchers said that this battery will be commercialized around 2020 and will be substantially improved by 2025.
Panasonic: The latest solid battery energy density has increased by 3-4 times
It is reported that the solid Panasonic battery will increase the range of the RAV4 electric version by at least 3 times to more than 500 kilometers, and it will reach the mileage of ordinary gasoline models for the first time.
Samsung: Sulfide electrolyte system
Bosch: Solid-state electric vehicle battery will be launched before 2020, with doubled battery life and halved cost
Bosch and Seeo then jointly established a new factory with Japan's famous GSYUASA (Yuasa) Battery Company and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, focusing on solid-state anode lithium-ion batteries.
Officials said that Sakti3 has produced batteries with an energy density of 1100 watt-hours/liter, which is almost twice the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries.
BMW: 18650 lithium ion battery cell technology may be mass-produced in 2026
It is reported that this new battery will use solid-state electrolytes instead of the electrolytes currently used in lithium-ion batteries. This change can bring multiple benefits to the battery pack, such as lighter weight and lower risk of collision fire, while the battery capacity will also increase by 15%-20%.
Hyundai: Focus on 18650 lithium ion battery cell research and development
Lee Ki-sang, head of new energy vehicles at Hyundai Motor Group and senior vice president of Hyundai Group, said that the next generation of solid-state batteries has great potential. He predicts that existing lithium batteries will be eliminated around 2022 or 2023, and solid-state batteries are most likely to be used in the future.
British Dyson: Investing $1.4 billion to develop new solid-state lithium batteries
British billionaire James Dyson said his company will invest $2.7 billion to launch all-electric vehicles by 2020. Previously, James Dyson also announced that he would invest $1.4 billion to build a battery factory to promote the development of battery technology.
Dyson also invested heavily in the acquisition of 18650 lithium ion battery cell company Sakti3. When acquiring Sakti3, Dyson himself mentioned that he would invest nearly $1 billion to mass-produce solid-state batteries.
Apple: New patent for all-18650 lithium ion battery cell
Not long ago, the US Patent and Trademark Office announced a new patent related to Apple's 18650 lithium ion battery cell charging technology, which is a 18650 lithium ion battery cell charging technology for portable devices. Since 2012, Apple has actively begun to lay out patents for all-18650 lithium ion battery cell technology.
In addition to the above companies, some major players mentioned by Orbis Research in the "Global 18650 lithium ion battery cell Market 2017-2021" report include: Cymbet, Infinite Power Solutions, Solid Power, Planar Energy, Excellatron, Bright Volt, ST Microelectronics and Front Edge Technology.
