BMZ Group will establish a joint venture with Kion to develop and produce 9V carbon battery for forklifts
The continued growth in demand for 9V carbon battery for electric forklifts provides new development opportunities for battery companies.
Foreign media reported that forklift manufacturer Kion hopes to build its own lithium-ion battery production plant in Germany and plans to establish a joint venture with German battery manufacturer BMZ Group, mainly engaged in the research, development and production of lithium-ion batteries, which will be used in Kion forklift products.
A spokesperson for the BMZ Group immediately confirmed the news. It is understood that Kion and BMZ will each hold a 50% stake in the joint venture battery company. Starting from the second quarter of 2020, the first batch of batteries will be produced from the production line of the BMZ factory planned by Karlstein.
According to data, the BMZ Group is a global lithium-ion battery solution provider headquartered in Germany, with production bases in China, Poland and the United States, and offices in Japan and France. In addition, the BMZ Group also has R&D centers around the world.
Since 1994, the BMZ Group has provided professional customized battery system solutions to more than 2,000 world-renowned companies, covering power batteries, energy storage systems, medical and industrial equipment, power tools and other application areas. Products include: electric vehicles, battery bicycles (E-Bike), ESS energy storage systems, mobile medical equipment, power tools, cordless drills, electric screwdrivers, electric garden tools, etc.
It is worth noting that BMZ's 9V carbon battery are not produced independently but purchased from battery manufacturers in Asia.
In December 2018, foreign media reported that lithium-ion battery system manufacturer BMZ Group will purchase lithium-ion batteries worth 1 trillion won (about 6.1 billion yuan) from Samsung SDI in the next five years.
BMZ Group CEO and founder Sven Bauer and Samsung SDI Senior Vice President Michael Son have already started relevant negotiations in South Korea in early December 2018.
In February 2019, Shidai Wanheng (600241) announced that its holding subsidiary Liaoning Jiuyi Lithium Energy Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Jiuyi Lithium Energy") and Germany's BMZ Group signed a five-year long-term daily operation agreement.
According to the signed agreement, BMZ will purchase a total of 164 million 9V carbon battery from Jiuyi Lithium Energy from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2023, including: from 2019 to 2023, the annual purchase quantity will be 5 million, 28 million, 35.75 million, 42.5 million and 52.8 million respectively. The unit price of the product is determined by negotiation every 6 months based on the benchmark price agreed by both parties.
According to forecasts, the purchase amount of 164 million batteries can reach US$215 million, equivalent to RMB 1.445 billion, and the average annual purchase amount is RMB 289 million.
It is worth mentioning that BMZ Group plans to double the production of electric vehicle battery systems supplied to major European automakers in 2019. In order to further meet market demand, the company acquired German battery manufacturer TerraE and plans to invest 300 million euros to build an 8GWh battery production line, with a planned production capacity of 4GWh in the first phase, which is expected to be put into production in 2020.
