    Unraveling the composition of the solid electrolyte interface of 18650 lithium battery 2600mah and hoping to create a new battery technology

     

    Although 18650 lithium battery 2600mah are now the mainstream of energy storage, the molecular and atomic basic science of their charging and discharging is still a mystery.

     

    According to the study of the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory in "Nature Catalysis", the research team has made a breakthrough in the chemical composition of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) between the electrode and the liquid electrolyte. Dusan Strmcnik, a chemical engineer at the Materials Science Department (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory, said that this will help improve the team's ability to predict battery life, which is crucial for electric vehicle manufacturers.

     

    Scientists have long been committed to cracking the SEI of 18650 lithium battery 2600mah, but they only know that SEI is formed when the battery is charged, producing a thousandth of a millimeter thick film on the graphite electrode, which can protect the interface from harmful reactions while allowing lithium ions to shuttle between the electrode and the electrolyte. Therefore, for 18650 lithium battery 2600mah, a good SEI is a necessary condition. Strmcnik pointed out that battery efficiency and life depend on the quality of SEI. If scientists can find out its chemical properties and independent composition rules, they can improve battery efficiency through SEI.

     

    Therefore, an international research team composed of Argonne National Laboratory, University of Copenhagen, University of Munich, and BMW Group successfully solved the common chemical substance lithium fluoride in lithium-ion battery SEI.

     

    Experimental and calculation results show that hydrogen fluoride will produce an electrochemical reaction during battery charging, which will transform from electrolyte to solid lithium fluoride and generate hydrogen. This type of reaction is highly dependent on electrode materials such as graphite, graphene and metal, proving the importance of battery catalysts.
