Adhere to multiple technical routes in parallel - 18500 battery
Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Recommended Model Catalog for the Promotion and Application of New Energy Vehicles", which did not include ternary electric commercial buses, which means that models that are not included in the "Catalog" will not be able to enjoy government subsidies and policy benefits of exemption from purchase tax (10%). A "suspension order" for ternary lithium batteries has thrown a "bomb" into the Chinese new energy vehicle industry, which is advancing rapidly, triggering a technical dispute over lithium battery research and development, and at the same time, it has also brought huge uncertainty to the development of the industry. Some manufacturers have taken the high-level route - diplomatic letters, and some have taken the grassroots route - joint letters, which is very lively.
Among the many opinions, Dr. Kirk, deputy director of the Chaowei Group Research Institute and national expert, said in an exclusive interview with reporters that because Chaowei has always insisted on multiple technical routes and multiple specifications of products in parallel, the power battery products put into the market in batches include both the main lithium iron phosphate battery system and the ternary material system. Therefore, the temporary suspension of ternary lithium batteries has little impact on Chaowei's production plan.
Ternary lithium battery has a rough fate
At present, as the two major camps in the power battery industry, ternary lithium battery and lithium iron phosphate have their own advantages in performance. Ternary lithium battery has high energy density and fast charging and discharging speed, but poor stability and safety; while lithium iron phosphate has relatively mature technology and relatively outstanding safety performance, but its energy density is relatively low.
In the early stage of domestic power battery industrialization, considering the maturity of technology, many companies choose to mass-produce lithium iron phosphate batteries. In February last year, the Ministry of Science and Technology issued the "Implementation Plan for Key Special Projects of New Energy Vehicles in the National Key R&D Plan", proposing that the energy density of car power batteries should reach 200Wh/kg by the end of 2015. Judging from the indicators stipulated therein, ternary lithium battery is the battery system most likely to achieve the goal at present. Bathed in the sunshine of government policies, the ternary lithium battery industry has also ushered in a "spring" of rapid development. Including Tianjin Zhongju, Wanxiang and many other battery companies have reversed the trend and invested a lot of funds, equipment, and human resources in research and development and increased production of ternary lithium batteries. As soon as the "suspension order" was issued, the "safety" issue hit many companies, causing an uproar and making the fate of ternary lithium batteries uncertain.
"Suspension order" triggers safety disputes
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology temporarily stopped ternary lithium batteries, while other types of power batteries such as lithium iron phosphate were not affected. Does this mean that batteries such as lithium iron phosphate are safer than ternary material systems?
Kirk believes that this is not the case. He said that the safety of new energy vehicles and lithium-ion battery systems depends on a variety of factors, including the lithium-ion battery positive electrode material system, rather than just the positive electrode material itself. Accidents such as the Shenzhen Wuzhoulong vehicle catching fire while charging and the Xiamen bus catching fire were not caused by ternary lithium batteries, which shows that the safety of monomer materials cannot represent the safety of the power battery system or the entire vehicle.
Also at the China Electric Vehicle Hundred People Conference, Ouyang Minggao, a professor at the Department of Automotive Engineering of Tsinghua University, reported the statistical results of safety accidents of new energy vehicles in China. The results showed that the accidents mainly came from short circuits caused by collisions, external short circuits caused by water in the battery, electrical connection failures, battery overcharging, and external short circuits caused by leakage of battery cells.
Previously, experts said that safety issues caused by battery materials only account for 10% of the problems faced by new energy vehicles, while safety hazards caused by battery management systems account for as high as 40%. "In the entire lithium-ion battery, the battery management system is the weakest link and the main reason for safety failure." Sun Yanxian, general manager of Chaowei Chuangyuan Lithium Battery, believes that if it is not a problem of the battery system's shortcomings, no matter which positive electrode material is used, it should be supported.
Lithium battery research and development should be carried out along multiple technical routes
The reason why the "suspension order" of ternary lithium batteries has little impact on Chaowei is mainly due to its extremely reasonable layout in the development of power lithium batteries. "Don't be limited to a certain material. The research and development of lithium batteries should be carried out along multiple technical routes in parallel, which is the development trend of the future power battery industry." Sun Yanxian put forward his own lithium battery development ideas.
In fact, as early as 2006, Chaowei had already started the research and development and production of lithium batteries. Since then, it has been committed to the research on key issues such as the specific energy and safety of lithium-ion batteries, and insisted on multiple technical routes. Ten years of precipitation, accumulation and development. In January 2015, the "New Energy Vehicle Power Battery System Innovation Team" led by Dr. Kirk was selected as the first batch of Zhejiang Province's leading innovation teams; in March 2015, Chaowei Group's first batch of new energy vehicle power lithium-ion batteries officially rolled off the production line; in June 2015, Chaowei Group's "Annual Production of 2000MWh Electric Vehicle Lithium-ion Battery Automated Production Demonstration Project" was selected as the only battery project in Zhejiang Province in the "2015 Zhejiang Province Two-industry Deep Integration Special Plan"; and the second phase of the new energy vehicle power lithium-ion battery project with an annual output value of 12 billion yuan is progressing in an orderly manner and is scheduled to be put into production in June, when the total production capacity will reach 4 billion watt-hours.
"It is currently unknown whether the ban on ternary lithium batteries will be lifted in the future. But one thing is worth making clear, that is, no matter which technical route is chosen, we must pay attention to the reliability, stability and safety of power batteries during use." Sun Yanxian said that Chaowei will closely follow the direction of national policies and fully realize standardization, intelligence, automation and low cost in the process of lithium battery research and development and manufacturing, so as to transform and upgrade the industry with the four modernizations, so that Chaowei's lithium battery industry can open up a broader territory in the new energy industry map.
