U.S. Department of Energy: Launches $59 million to accelerate advanced vehicle technology research

Recently, US Deputy Secretary of Energy Mark W. Menezes announced that US$59 million will be invested in advanced vehicle technology innovation research projects. This project will provide financial support for the research and development of advanced battery and electric drive systems, energy-saving mobility systems, efficient power system materials, and optimization of advanced engine and fuel technologies.

Every day, American consumers and companies rely on transportation to work and learn, said Deputy Secretary Menezes. Through this funding opportunity, we hope to partner with the best and brightest minds across the country to advance early-stage research and development of vehicle technologies that will make transportation more affordable, safer, and more reliable for all Americans.

It is understood that the project areas include:

      1. Solid-state battery materials, testing tools and modeling (up to $12.5 million): Project Lithium-Ion Batteries will focus on developing new solid electrolytes to solve material challenges, achieve cost reduction, and improve battery energy density and cycle life .

      2. Add eight times the power density of electric motors (up to $3.5 million): Projects will focus on new, innovative materials and designs that reduce size and increase the power density of electric drive systems by eight times while enabling lower costs and greater Affordable electric drive system performance.

      3. Energy Efficient Mobility Systems Research (up to $7 million): Projects will focus on vehicle automation and connectivity to improve the efficiency of transportation systems for vehicles and infrastructure, reducing the time, cost, energy and cargo required.

      4. Predictive lithium-ion battery manufacturer modeling capabilities for fuel and multi-mode engine co-optimization ($3.5 million): The project will focus on improving the accuracy, speed and predictive capabilities of multi-mode combustion simulation models of current high-performance computing systems. Future exascale level systems.

      5. New materials and engine technologies for efficient powertrains (up to $15 million): Projects will develop innovative powertrain systems that incorporate advanced materials to reduce weight and increase engine temperatures while exploring new fuels to improve vehicle fuel economy sex.
