Can Ni-MH battery and Li-ion battery charger be used interchangeably?

For friends who can't have batteries and chargers, the question of whether nickel-metal hydride batteries are compatible with lithium battery chargers is not well understood. Let's briefly talk about the relationship between nickel-metal hydride batteries and lithium battery chargers from the relationship between batteries and chargers. Whether the lithium battery charger can be used universally.

    1. The difference between nickel-metal hydride batteries and lithium batteries leads to different charging requirements

Although nickel-metal hydride batteries and lithium batteries are both batteries, they are two completely different batteries, not only because of their different raw materials, but also very different in charge and discharge performance.

For NiMH batteries, the acceptable charging current is generally 1C rate or below, most of them are charged at 0.2C rate, the charging time is relatively long, and a small part is charged at 0.5 to 1C rate, which belongs to high rate NiMH The battery can support larger current discharge batteries, but the charging time also takes 2 to 3 hours.

For lithium batteries, most of the charging currents that can be tolerated are generally between 1C and 1.5C, and the charging time is generally about 1 hour. A small part of it is charged at a rate of 2C to 5C. This belongs to the range of high-rate batteries. Generally, it is used by some electronic devices that require high current discharge. The time required for full charging will be shorter.

Then the nominal voltage of a single cell of a nickel-metal hydride battery is 1.2V, and the nominal voltage of a single cell of a lithium battery is 3.7V. Obviously, the voltage difference between them is relatively large, and the charging voltage of the charger Generally certain.

In this way, if a lithium battery charger is used to charge a Ni-MH battery, it is very likely that the Ni-MH battery will be overcharged due to excessive voltage or current, causing serious heat generation, resulting in battery damage and scrapping, and even a spontaneous combustion explosion accident may occur. Conversely, if you use a NiMH battery charger to charge the lithium battery, it may never charge or not fully charge.

In this way, Ni-MH battery and Li-ion battery chargers cannot be used universally. This is true for single-function dedicated chargers. The chargers commonly used for electric motorcycles in our home cannot be used in different brands of electric vehicles. Unless the battery types and parameters of the two electric vehicles are the same, it will easily cause the battery life to be shortened.

For multi-function chargers, Ni-MH battery and Li-ion battery charger can be used in common, but when using it, parameters need to be set.

    2. The intelligent multi-function charger can meet the charging needs of Ni-MH batteries and lithium batteries

With the development of charger technology, there are many multi-functional smart chargers on the market. There are many kinds and different uses. Therefore, when purchasing chargers, you need to understand your charging needs and choose the ones that are suitable for your application. Multifunctional charger.
