The new energy vehicle war is imminent. Is the technology path quietly changing?
With energy conservation and emission reduction as the top priority, the government and enterprises suddenly realized that compared with pure electric vehicles, which are more technically difficult, hybrid vehicles are more likely to achieve the energy-saving goals set by the Chinese government. As a result, a competition focused on hybrid power has begun.
What is particularly worth noting is that this is a delicate period before China's 12th Five-Year Plan for new energy vehicles is about to be released. Has the technology path of new energy vehicles changed?
Hybrid takes over?
Although pure electric vehicles have the highest policy subsidies in the country, they are still a long way from the government's goal of mass production due to high prices, incomplete charging facilities, and even safety hazards such as battery explosions. Gotta go. As a result, more automobile companies are considering plug-in hybrid vehicles, which are easier to mass-produce, as their strategic plan to occupy China's new energy vehicle market.
Recently, this momentum has been particularly evident. The investment in hybrid technology by state-owned automobile groups in the past few years is gradually showing results. SAIC Motor (Quotes, Information) recently launched the Roewe 750 mid-to-high-end hybrid sedan. Two months ago, the Pentium plug-in hybrid sedan and Pentium pure electric sedan independently developed by FAW Group since 2009 officially rolled off the assembly line.
Joint ventures are even testing the waters one after another. Shanghai General Motors has launched the Buick LaCrosse eAssist hybrid and the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid dual-mode gasoline-electric hybrid SUV. GAC Toyota has launched the Camry hybrid sedan, while FAW Toyota plans to introduce the third-generation Prius hybrid sedan.
Even in order to seize the market opportunity as soon as possible and achieve the sales target, the luxury car brand Lexus set a price of 279,000 yuan when launching the CT200h, a high-end compact hybrid car, into the Chinese market. This price is nearly 10,000 yuan lower than the Toyota Prius hybrid sedan launched in China five years ago, and the latter is still lower than the former in terms of brand positioning.
Toyota, which maintains its leading edge in hybrid power, will not only introduce newer models to the Chinese market, but also focus on reducing costs. On October 22, Toyota announced that it would invest US$689 million to establish Toyota Motor R&D Center (China) Co., Ltd. in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, focusing on the research and development of new energy vehicle technology and the production of related core parts.
Facing the automobile market with the largest consumption power in the world, the motivations behind many car companies to seize the Chinese hybrid vehicle market are self-evident.
This shows that enterprises are not completely passive in waiting for national policies, but are also actively promoting them. Wang Cheng of the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, who has participated in the 863 plan's major scientific and technological work on electric vehicles in the field of energy technology and is one of the drafters of the energy-saving and new energy vehicle development plan, said in an interview with China Business News last Friday that although the new The energy vehicle plan has not been released, but the important ideas of national ministries and commissions have been disclosed through forums and other means. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that companies take the lead in taking action.
Policy focus shifting?
The focus of automobile companies on hybridization reflects the shift in policy focus from another aspect. A few months ago, Dong Yang, executive vice president of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, publicly advised companies not to give up on hybrid vehicles. The implication is interpreted by the outside world as: the country will increase investment in hybrid power.
