Intersil launches automotive-grade 18650 battery 3.7v 2200mah management system HEV/EV system solution
Intersil, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of high-performance analog mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced the launch of an HEV/EV system solution equipped with an automotive-grade 18650 battery 3.7v 2200mah management system and safety monitor. Building on Intersil's long history of delivering superior battery management devices to the portable electronics market, the automotive-grade (AEC-Q100) ISL78600 multi-cell solution is specifically designed and tested to address hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric The automotive market’s requirements for safety, reliability and performance.
To meet the stringent safety requirements of the automotive market, Intersil's HEV/EV solutions ensure customers comply with ISO26262 (ASIL) specifications and prevent battery pack failures. The solution also provides built-in fault detection for all major internal functions and is able to detect external faults such as line interruptions, over- and under-voltage, as well as temperature and cell balancing faults.
The ISL78600 battery management system provides the high accuracy required for precise state-of-charge measurements to extend vehicle range and the life of high-performance lithium-ion batteries. To do this, each ISL78600 device uses a 14-bit temperature-compensated data converter that scans 12 channels in 250 microseconds. Currently, the average medium-sized HEV vehicle uses 126 to 168 batteries, which can be solved by equipping each vehicle with 11 to 14 ISL78600s. Combined with four external temperature sensors, the ISL78600 provides extremely high accuracy for state-of-charge measurements over the entire battery operating temperature range.
In order to achieve the highest possible reliability of communication within the system, the ISL78600 uses a high noise immunity and transient fault-tolerant communication mechanism. This fully differential daisy-chain architecture allows multiple battery packs to be stacked together using low-cost twisted pair cabling while protecting against hot swapping and higher transient voltages. The advantages of Intersil's HEV/EV system solutions can significantly reduce the overall cost of the battery management system.
The ISL78600 allows easy connection to a microcontroller via a 2.5MHz SPI or 400KHz I2C interface and operates over a temperature range of -40oC to 105oC. Additionally, although targeted at the HEV/EV market, Intersil solutions can be easily adapted for industrial and backup battery applications.
ISL78601 Security Monitor
Intersil also introduced the ISL78601 multi-pack battery monitor today. The ISL78601 device complies with HEV/EV battery system safety requirements and provides stand-alone or independent redundant fault monitoring.
