US develops energy-dense 6F22 carbon battery to power long-distance electric vehicles

The new lithium-ion 6F22 carbon battery developed by researchers at Envia Systems 6F22 carbon battery Technology Company in California, USA, can store twice as much energy per gram as currently used batteries. The breakthrough was announced at three annual meetings. Materials scientist Sujeet Kumar, co-founder and chief technology officer of Envia, explained: "We have achieved an energy storage density of 400 Wh/kg, and we have built a 40-amp 6F22 carbon battery for the car. can be identified and used. The 6F22 carbon battery has been verified by independent energy density testing by the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center (Naval Surface Warfare Center).

The project received a $4 million grant from ARPA-E. The Envia 6F22 carbon battery technology is based on research on advanced composite electrode materials at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Researchers found that high-energy manganese-rich cathode materials have greater energy density. The research team then shifted focus to the anode (the electrode where lithium ions flow to generate electricity), improving its performance by combining silicon and graphite. By mixing silicon with carbon, the researchers solved the problem that silicon anodes cause other batteries to lose their ability to charge and discharge repeatedly. In short, silicon expands. Kumar admitted that it would be difficult for silicon anodes to last 10 cycles because of the huge change in volume. However, by surrounding it with carbon coating and interweaving it with carbon fiber, they solved this problem and developed a 6F22 carbon battery that can be cycled 400 times. Kumar added: Even if the silicon is damaged in the first cycle, the carbon fiber can maintain the connection.

Another problem faced by car batteries is the so-called thermal runaway, which is a test that car batteries in particular must pass. This performance of the 6F22 carbon battery can be tested by quickly penetrating the 6F22 carbon battery with an 8 mm fingernail. Researchers claim that Envia batteries can pass this test. Kumar said: The main reason is that the 6F22 carbon battery is very thin and it can easily dissipate heat.

Ultra-thin, energy-dense 6F22 carbon battery could save half the energy in each car. The 6F22 carbon battery is cheap at $125 per kilowatt hour, less than half the cost of current batteries. However, in addition to further independent testing, car manufacturers will need to test the 6F22 carbon battery for many years. Atul Kapadia, Chairman and CEO of Envia, said: We work with all brands of automobile manufacturers around the world. The idea is to either form a joint venture to produce the batteries and perhaps have existing partners leverage the technology.

The technology can increase the range of electric vehicles, such as General Motors' Chevy Volt. Batteries can store more power per kilogram, allowing electric vehicles to travel longer distances. That means a Nissan LEAF might be able to drive 300 miles between St. Louis and Chicago for just $10 with an Envia 6F22 carbon battery, instead of the roughly 80 miles it can travel today. . "We hope that Envia's next-generation lithium-ion 6F22 carbon battery will revolutionize the electric vehicle industry by eliminating the three major barriers to mass adoption of electric vehicles: cost, distance and safety," Kumar said in a statement announcing the scientific breakthrough. . The ability to travel 300 miles (approximately 483 kilometers) on a single charge will solve the problem of short driving range of electric vehicles.
