Scientists develop 18650 lithium ion battery to fully charge future electric vehicles in ten minutes

British media said scientists said they were trying to solve the problem of long charging times for lithium-ion batteries. New battery technology can enable electric vehicles to travel more than 200 miles (1 mile is about 1.6 kilometers) on a charge in just 10 minutes.

According to a report on the British "Guardian" website on October 30, Wang Chaoyang, a professor at Pennsylvania State University in the United States and co-author of the research report, said: "If fast charging facilities can be seen everywhere on the roadside, drivers will no longer have to worry about cruising range. Every time they charge, After driving 200 to 300 miles on electricity, it can be charged for another 200 to 300 miles in 10 minutes.”

According to reports, fast charging in just a few minutes requires high currents. However, charging lithium-ion batteries this way can cause problems at low temperatures, even at 30 degrees Celsius, because metallic lithium can deposit around the anode. Increasing the temperature to about 60 degrees Celsius avoids this problem by allowing the lithium ions to move faster, but leaving the battery constantly hot can still be problematic.

Professor Wang said: "At high temperatures, the battery active materials will react with the electrolyte to form a passivation film, which will consume active lithium and cause high resistance." He said that the formation of this film takes time, therefore, The research team came up with a way to keep the battery at 60 degrees Celsius just long enough to charge it.

To this end, the research team developed a battery that uses thin nickel foil to create an internal self-heating structure. By heating the battery to 60 degrees Celsius and then cooling it to room temperature, they were able to charge 80% of the battery in 10 minutes without damaging the battery, even if charged this way repeatedly.

The team used single-cell batteries with smaller capacities (about 10 amp hours) in their research, but they say the technology could be used to develop batteries for electric vehicles.

"We can charge batteries of different sizes with the same (charging) time, as long as the charging current increases in proportion to the size of the battery," he said.
