Key to EV safety lies in 18650 battery pack management
As the scale of the new energy vehicle market continues to expand, safety accidents involving electric vehicles occur from time to time. Electric vehicle safety is becoming a topic of increasing concern to the industry and consumers. According to Xiao Yang, director of the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Simulation and Control at the School of Automotive Engineering of Jilin University, incomplete statistical results show that so far, a total of 79 electric vehicle safety accidents have occurred in my country this year, involving 96 vehicles, of which, 58% of accidents are caused by batteries spontaneously, and the remaining accidents are caused by collisions, circuit failures, moisture and water immersion, etc. Xiao Yang believes that one of the reasons for the frequent accidents of electric vehicles is the excessive pursuit of energy density. He said bluntly: "Under the premise that the space for automobile products is limited, the quality of the entire vehicle needs to be continuously reduced. One of the important ways to increase the driving range is to increase the energy density of the 18650 battery pack."
Zhang Wei, director of the 18650 battery pack system management department of CATL New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., said frankly that the current research and development cycle of vehicle companies is constantly shortening and product verification time is insufficient. In order to ensure the safety and reliability of power batteries, it is necessary to have in-depth and extensive knowledge of early system design. Otherwise, it will be difficult to realize the functional safety of the 18650 battery pack later.
In response to the issue of improving the safety of power batteries, Zhang Tianqiang, director of the System Integration Development Department of the New Energy Development Institute of China FAW Group Co., Ltd., believes that vehicle companies should implement the concept of "safety first" into the entire process of products and driving, from products to The principle of "safety first" should be adhered to from definition, research and development, to manufacturing and use. "Build a safety design business process, carry out closed-loop design for the vehicle end and user end, improve the 18650 battery pack life, and ensure the safe use of the power 18650 battery pack throughout its life cycle." Zhang Tianqiang suggested. Wang Fang, chief expert and deputy chief engineer of the Testing and Certification Division of China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co., Ltd., put forward three suggestions: improving collision safety, realizing vehicle integration, and strengthening thermal runaway protection. "During consumer use, we should also pay attention to hidden 18650 battery pack safety issues caused by long-term accumulated damage." Wang Fang emphasized.
In order to find the root cause of power 18650 battery pack safety accidents, universities have also carried out research and analysis on 18650 battery pack fire failure mechanisms and other aspects. Xiao Yang said that overcharging, low-temperature and high-temperature environments will cause a certain degree of damage to power batteries, induce thermal runaway and lead to safety accidents. Xiong Rui, a professor at the Department of Vehicle Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology, pointed out that from the existing literature, the current main research focuses on overcharging and internal short circuits, but in fact external short circuits are involved in 26% of 18650 battery pack safety accidents, which deserves further attention. .
