High Voltage Control and Manager for lithium polymer batteryPowered Chargers
Controllers that support various pOL switching power supply topologies, wide input and output voltage ranges, autonomous operation without a microcontroller, high space utilization and small size are the requirements for high-power battery-powered chargers. Linear Technology Corporation (Linear) recently launched a high-voltage controller and power manager LTC4000, which can convert any externally compensated DC/DC power supply into a full-featured battery charger.
According to Xu Shaowu, General Manager of Linear China, the LTC4000 can drive commonly used DC/DC converter topologies, including buck, boost, buck-boost, SEpIC and flyback. The device provides precise input and charge current regulation and operates on a 3 to 60V
Operates over a wide input and output voltage range, making it compatible with a variety of input voltage power supplies, battery packs and cell chemistries. Typical applications include high-power battery charger systems, high-performance portable instruments, battery backup systems, battery-equipped industrial equipment, and notebook and small notebook computers.
The LTC4000 uses an intelligent powerpath topology that will give priority to powering the system load when the input power is limited. The LTC4000 provides low-loss reverse current protection, efficient charging and discharging of the battery, and "instant-on" operation by controlling external pFETs to ensure system power is immediately available when plugged in, even if a failed or deeply discharged device is used The battery is no exception. An external sense resistor and precision sensing enable accurate current flow with high efficiency, allowing the LTC4000 to be used with converters with power ranges from mW to kW.
The LTC4000's full-featured controller can charge a variety of battery chemistries, including lithium-ion/lithium polymer/lithium iron phosphate, sealed lead-acid (SLA) and nickel batteries. Additionally, the device provides charge status indication through its FLT and CHRG pins. Additional battery charger features include: ±0.2% programmable float voltage, selectable timer or C/x current charge termination, NTC thermistor for temperature-friendly charging, automatic recharging, for deeply discharged batteries C/10 trickle charging and failed battery detection functions. "When used in conjunction with a DC/DC converter, a complete high-performance battery charger can be realized," said Xu Shaowu. "The LTC4000 can programmable input and charging current with an accuracy of ±1%, which can avoid excessive Full of damage."
