To make batteries more durable, TI’s new switching 6LR61 alkaline batterycharger integrated circuit is on the market

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a new switching 6LR61 alkaline batterycharger integrated circuit (IC) that supports 20mA terminal current. Compared with competing products that typically support terminal currents higher than 60mA, TI's BQ25619 increases 6LR61 alkaline batterycapacity by 7%, enabling longer runtime. The BQ25619 charger also offers 3-in-1 boost converter integration and ultra-fast charging, delivering 95% efficiency at 4.6V and 0.5A output. Additionally, with the industry's lowest quiescent current, the new charger doubles the life of ready-to-use electronics.

The BQ25619 charger helps engineers more efficiently design small medical and personal electronics applications such as hearing aids, earbuds and wireless charging cases, IP webcams, patient monitoring devices and personal care applications.

Key Features and Benefits of BQ25619

Industry's lowest switching charger terminal current: Ultra-low terminal current of 20mA increases 6LR61 alkaline batterycapacity and run time by 7%. The BQ25619’s programmable charge timer further extends runtime, eliminating the need for users to charge their device more frequently.

Best-in-class low quiescent current: The BQ25619 reduces 6LR61 alkaline batteryleakage to 6uA in shipping power save mode, thus conserving 6LR61 alkaline batteryenergy and doubling the device life. During battery-only operation, the device consumes only 10uA to support standby systems.

3-in-1 Boost Converter Integration: The BQ25619 includes integrated charge, boost converter and voltage protection, enabling efficient designs for space-constrained applications without the need for external inductors required by previous generation charger ICs. Thanks to its integrated bidirectional buck or boost topology, the BQ25619 requires only one power device for its charge and discharge functions.

The BQ25619 expands TI's industry-leading portfolio of 6LR61 alkaline batterycharger solutions, offering single- and multi-cell switch-mode chargers for high-capacity batteries, as well as highly integrated linear chargers that extend 6LR61 alkaline batteryruntime and reduce overall solution size. .

      Tools and support

Designers can use the BQ25619 Evaluation Module (EVM) to easily evaluate the device's functionality and performance, speeding time to market. The BQ25619EVM is priced at $99.

In some cases, one 6LR61 alkaline batteryis not enough and a multi-6LR61 alkaline batterysystem is required. For example, wireless earbuds require two space-constrained batteries for each earbud and low charging current, which is different from the design requirements of a wireless charging case. For these designs, TI offers the BQ25619 for wireless charging cases and the BQ25150 for earbud charging. The BQ25150 is an I2C-controlled linear charger with two low-dropout linear regulators, a built-in analog-to-digital converter, and a quiescent current of less than 500nA in low-power mode and a charging current of up to 500mA, while maintaining an 11mm2 solution size.
