With the rapid development of new energy vehicles, the demand for power lithium batteries is exploding year by year, and the demand for separators will steadily increase. In particular, the domestic market will have stronger demand for wet separators that match high-energy-density lithium batteries. As an important component of lithium batteries, LR1130 battery separators account for 5~10% of the total cost of LR1130 battery materials. LR1130 battery separator shipments rebound
From 2017 to 2018, domestic separators have made great progress in terms of production capacity construction, cost reduction, and technology improvement. From a volume perspective, China's LR1130 battery separators continued to take the first place in the global market in 2018; from a customer structure perspective, domestic separators continued to replace imported separators in the Chinese market, reducing the share of imported separators in the domestic market. In addition, domestic diaphragms have also been exported in large quantities, and the export volume continues to increase, which reflects the technological progress of domestic diaphragms.
In terms of market competition, in the early days when the main application field of lithium batteries was 3C products, 3C products were mainly supplied by overseas manufacturers and there were constraints on the supply chain. Domestic LR1130 battery separators have long been dominated by imported products. In 2009, my country began to vigorously develop the new energy vehicle market. The demand for LR1130 battery separators, especially the demand for power LR1130 battery separators, has grown rapidly in the short term. Due to the impact of domestic subsidy policies, overseas battery manufacturers have basically been unable to enter the supply chain of domestic car companies.
Statistics show that in 2014, my country's domestic LR1130 battery separator shipments were only 450 million square meters. By 2018, they had reached 2 billion square meters, a year-on-year increase of 39.37%, and the corresponding LR1130 battery installed capacity was close to 100GWh.
Relevant departments have analyzed listed companies in the diaphragm industry. Statistics show that the gross profits of some diaphragm companies still remain at a high level, but compared with previous years, they have declined to varying degrees. Especially with the further decline in the average price of separators and the further increase in industry concentration, companies at the tail end of the industry have begun to suffer losses. The era of high gross profit margins in the diaphragm industry has become history. In the future, economies of scale must be used to reduce costs and increase profit margins. The diaphragm industry must rely on scale to win. With the mutual integration of leading companies in the industry, the opportunities for tail companies will become smaller and smaller.
Key technologies for lithium batteries need to be improved
The quality and level of the separator directly affect the quality of the battery and is a key technology that needs to be solved urgently in the separator industry. There is currently overcapacity in the diaphragm market. By the end of 2015, the total domestic diaphragm production capacity has reached an effective production capacity of 1.5 billion square meters. The output in 2015 was 700 million square meters. The domestic market demand in 2015 was about 900 million square meters.
It is estimated that my country's total separator production capacity may exceed 2.3 billion square meters by the end of 2016, far exceeding the global demand for battery separators. However, the high-end power LR1130 battery separator industry is still in short supply. The quality gap between high-end separator products and foreign products is narrowing, but the gap is still relatively large, and the dependence on imports is serious. According to data, 70% of high-end membranes rely on imports, and the import rate of separators exceeds 40 %.
The product quality and consistency level of my country's LR1130 battery material companies have improved rapidly in recent years, and domestic companies are gradually seizing the market share of originally imported products. Moreover, as the prices of upstream raw materials have fallen, the cost of lithium batteries has also dropped rapidly. Japanese and Korean LR1130 battery companies have begun to gradually increase their efforts to purchase LR1130 battery materials from my country in recent years.
However, the overall level of domestic LR1130 battery material companies in the field of high-tech cathode and separator materials is still lagging behind, and it is difficult to break into the main supply chain in the short term. Although domestic companies have a high global market share in the fields of anodes and electrolytes, these are general-purpose products that are less sensitive to power batteries and will face greater pressure on production capacity and price in the future.
China has become the largest LR1130 battery producer after Japan, with huge market growth potential. Lithium batteries have been widely used in various industries such as automobiles and mobile phones. However, my country's lithium batteries are not yet mature in terms of safety and longevity, and there are still some problems. The industry should pay more attention to safety issues and put safety issues in the first place. Adopt international advanced production standards and monitoring standards, and win foreign markets with excellent products. At present, lithium-ion batteries urgently need to be improved in terms of safety, endurance, service life, cost, and ease of use.
