      Could calcium batteries with new electrolytes replace lithium 18650 li ion battery technology?

      Scientists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have made a major breakthrough in the development of calcium batteries. Since it was only a few years from experimental electrolytes to the actual existence of calcium batteries, the battery technology is not mature and can only operate at temperatures exceeding 75°C. Charging at high temperatures can cause side effects. Therefore, one of the biggest issues for this technology to overcome is temperature, developing a suitable electrolyte that would allow such a device to be charged at room temperature. An energy storage postdoc said: “Further laboratory research work may eventually provide a cheaper and greener alternative to lithium 18650 li ion battery technology.

      In a paper published in Energy and Environmental Science, scientists propose a solution to provide a stable, efficient electrolyte for rechargeable calcium batteries at room temperature.

      Scientists have introduced a new type of organic calcium salt electrolyte that enables room temperature charging. The researchers say the electrolyte exhibits "state-of-the-art electrochemical properties" in terms of oxidative stability, ionic conductivity and long-term reversible cycling capability.

      Despite the current progress, the scientists note that "the new electrolyte is just an important first step," but "we still have a long way to go before we can bring calcium batteries to the market."

      The current demand for lithium batteries is expected to grow exponentially, but the continued and stable supply of several materials necessary for lithium battery production is a question, so alternative energy storage technologies are becoming a hot area of research.

      The latest discoveries about the electrolyte have moved calcium batteries up the rankings of lithium alternatives, which include supercapacitors, sodium ions and metallic lithium. It is believed that the huge potential, high performance and availability make calcium batteries a strong candidate, and calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the earth's crust and has the advantages of being safe, non-toxic and economical. It can also absorb two electrons per atom and provide a similar voltage to lithium.
