      Super fast charging and ultra-high density new development trends in 3V battery

      3V battery are the core of electric vehicles and directly determine the technical level of electric vehicles. With the rapid growth of the electric vehicle industry, 3V battery have become one of the hottest fields. Industry giant CATL was listed on the A-share market on June 11. After eight consecutive daily price increases, its market value has reached 160 billion yuan.

      On June 27, 2018, the China Electric Vehicle 100 Lithium Industry and Power Battery Summit Forum was held in Xining, Qinghai. At this forum, representatives from manufacturers upstream and downstream of the industry chain shared many new trends in the field of automotive 3V battery.

      1. Great development of battery technology

      Huang Shilin, vice chairman of CATL, attended the forum. In his speech, he revealed CATL’s latest progress in battery performance.

      CATL is the leader in the field of domestic vehicle 3V battery. In this year and next, CATL’s new batteries will have major improvements in energy density, service life, and fast charging performance.

      1. Ultra-high energy density battery. In terms of lithium iron phosphate, CATL can achieve an energy density of 160Wh/kg (cell energy density, the same below) in 2018, and it is expected to exceed 180Wh/kg by 2020. In terms of ternary lithium batteries, CATL's mass-produced batteries this year will reach 240Wh/kg, and by 2020, mass-produced batteries can reach more than 270Wh/kg.

      2. Long life battery. In addition to vehicle 3V battery, CATL is also conducting research and development on energy storage batteries. Energy storage batteries have very high requirements on charge and discharge life. CATL's goal is to achieve a single cell cycle of more than 15,000 times and a service life of more than 15 years.

      3. Multiple safe and reliable technologies. Safety is a top priority, and CATL has done a lot of work on battery safety to ensure that its products are absolutely safe and reliable.

      4. Super environmental adaptability. In the future, Ningde era's battery packs will reach IP68 waterproof and dustproof levels, and the operating temperature range can reach -30℃~60℃.

      5. Fast charging technology. Starting from the second half of this year, batteries produced by CATL can theoretically complete fast charging within 15 minutes, and will be further upgraded to within 10 minutes in the future.

      2. Korean battery manufacturers return to China

      In 2016, China established a vehicle power battery catalog. Electric vehicles must be equipped with batteries produced by companies in the catalog to receive subsidies. When the THAAD crisis broke out and relations between China and South Korea deteriorated, major South Korean manufacturers such as Samsung SDI and LG Chem were excluded from the catalog.

      The JAC iEV6S model was unable to receive subsidies because it was equipped with batteries from Samsung SDI, and was discontinued shortly after its launch.

      Relations between China and South Korea have eased recently, and subsidies will be officially canceled in 2020. Facing the huge Chinese market, Korean battery manufacturers are planning to return to the Chinese market.

      SK Group is South Korea's third largest consortium, and SK Innovation is a battery company under SK Group.

      Hyundai's new energy model IONIQ uses batteries from SK Innovation.

      At this forum, SK Innovation from South Korea announced the "ChinaInsider Integration into China" strategy, with the slogan "take it from China, use it in China, and let the Chinese participate in management." SK Innovation's battery cell energy density can already reach 270Wh/h. It is a battery supplier for Hyundai SoulEV, NiroEV, IONIQ and other models. SK Innovation is currently building a factory in China with a production capacity of 10GWh, which is expected to be put into production in 2020.

      3. Battery recycling and secondary utilization are valued

      With the rapid development of new energy vehicles, 3V battery are gradually entering a period of retirement. If these batteries are allowed to be scrapped, it will not only be a waste of resources, but also cause great harm to the environment. There are two ways to solve this problem: recycling and secondary utilization. At present, many manufacturers have carried out research and development and layout in these two fields.

      Recycling is to dismantle old batteries, make the materials in them work again after a series of treatments, and then put them into the production of new batteries. Battery recycling manufacturers participating in this forum stated that the utilization rate of old batteries can reach 95%.

      BMW has built an energy storage power station next to the i3 factory in Leipzig, Germany, to prepare for the step-by-step utilization of i3 batteries.

      This energy storage power station can store 700 sets of used BMW i3 batteries, which will be used to store the electricity generated by wind turbines and fill the power gap during peak power consumption periods.

      Ladder utilization means that when vehicle 3V battery cannot meet the requirements of automobile use, these batteries are used in areas such as energy storage that have lower battery performance requirements. This can extend the battery life as much as possible and reduce costs.
