The United States successfully developed a new AAA Ni-MH batteries
In order to develop safe, low-cost and high-efficiency energy storage batteries and systems, Stanford University in the United States has created a new type of AAA Ni-MH batteries using water and salt. It is hoped that the battery can store wind and solar energy, effectively utilize renewable energy and develop into grid-scale energy storage equipment.
Solar energy and wind energy are popular renewable energy technologies today, but the industry is an intermittent energy source. Effective storage of excess electricity is a way to solve power shortages and oversupply. Although lithium-ion batteries are the leader in energy storage technology, large-scale construction of lithium Ion energy storage power plants will be expensive and require regular battery replacement.
The new AAA Ni-MH batteries developed by Stanford University can solve the cost and battery life challenges and is expected to be developed into a grid-level energy storage system. Cui Yi, professor of materials science at Stanford, pointed out that the team dissolved a special salt in water and electrodes to produce a reversible chemical reaction and store renewable energy electricity in the form of hydrogen.
Engineers have now successfully used hydrogen to generate electricity, and the next step is to prove that the water-based battery can be recharged. The team connected the power supply to a battery prototype that had exhausted its energy, and combined the manganese dioxide particles on the electrode with water to replenish the manganese sulfate salt in the solution. Once the salt in the solution is replenished, there will be a surplus of electrons and the cycle repeats again. The research is still in its preliminary stages, but researchers believe the technology can be expanded to industrial-grade energy storage systems that can be charged and discharged up to 10,000 times, creating a new type of AAA Ni-MH batteries with a lifespan of well over ten years.
