Ultra-safe zinc battery technology could compete with button battery 2032 of the future
In a more perfect world, your phone's battery would easily last all day, its power wouldn't degrade over time, and best of all, it wouldn't explode. It sounds like a dream, but researchers at the University of Maryland have developed a new water- and zinc-based battery that somehow meets all three of these criteria and could end up in future consumer electronics.
A paper on the technology, developed by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, was published Monday in the journal Natural Resources. The combination of zinc and water is particularly effective at solving safety issues, such as the one that caused Samsung Galaxy Note 7 batteries to explode in 2016. According to researchers, the new batteries do not pose the same fire risk as the lithium-ion batteries commonly used in phones and laptops. At the same time, it also surpasses button battery 2032 in terms of lifespan.
Zinc batteries are not new and have long been a safe, cheap energy option, but they have also been inhibited in the past by their limited life cycle and low energy density. Fei Wang, deputy director of journal papers and postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland and the Army Research Laboratory, said the new "zinc-containing water" battery is the best of both worlds. We have a battery that can compete with lithium-ion batteries in energy density, but without the risk of explosion or fire. "
The researchers say their new battery could eventually be used in consumer electronics. It can also be used in extreme conditions to improve the performance of vehicles used in special aerospace, special and deep-sea environments, where explosive batteries can have catastrophic consequences.
