The United States develops magnesium dry cell battery, which have better energy density and material costs than lithium batteries
Although lithium-ion batteries are the mainstay of energy storage today, there are still many research groups and manufacturers trying to find energy storage technologies that are more stable and effective than lithium batteries. The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has recently successfully developed Magnesium solid-state battery, and the battery prototype has better energy density and material cost than lithium-ion batteries.
Logically speaking, battery ions can flow between the positive and negative electrodes through the electrolyte to power the battery through electrochemical reactions, and the reaction must be reversible, otherwise the battery cannot be charged. However, the carbonate electrolyte in magnesium batteries is During charge and discharge cycles, a barrier layer is easily formed on the surface of magnesium, which hinders battery charging. Although magnesium can also be charged and discharged through highly corrosive liquid electrolytes, if corrosive electrolytes are used, magnesium batteries will not be able to operate at high voltages and there are safety concerns.
Researchers have successfully built a prototype of a magnesium solid-state battery. The study also pointed out that the protected magnesium anode can also be charged in a carbonate electrolyte and can provide more energy. In addition, the research team not only successfully developed a rechargeable magnesium battery, but also provided a solution to the incompatibility between the anode and the electrolyte and solved the limitations of the cathode for ions.
