      Aluminum-air batteries are a type of metal-air battery. This battery is claimed to be a monster battery that can "last 3,000Km by just adding water." It can destroy all existing batteries on the market into slag! Is this really the case? Next, we will analyze the aluminum-air battery technology.

      1. Principle of aluminum-air battery

      The chemical reaction of the aluminum-air battery is similar to that of the zinc-air battery. The aluminum-air battery uses high-purity aluminum Al (containing 99.99% aluminum) as the negative electrode, oxygen as the positive electrode, and potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) aqueous solution as the electrolyte . Aluminum absorbs oxygen in the air and produces a chemical reaction when the battery is discharged. The aluminum and oxygen react to convert into aluminum oxide.

      2. Advantages and disadvantages of aluminum-air batteries

      The advantages of aluminum-air batteries are mainly reflected in the following aspects:

      ① Large specific energy, the theoretical specific energy of aluminum-air battery can reach 8100Wh/kg;

      ②Light in weight, the total mass of an aluminum-air battery with the same energy is only 12% of the mass of a lead-acid battery;

      ③ Non-toxic and dangerous, can be recycled and reused;

      ④Aluminum raw materials are abundant.

      The disadvantages of aluminum-air batteries are also obvious:

      ① It is a chemical reaction device that releases electrical energy. It cannot be charged repeatedly and the aluminum electrode needs to be replaced to continue working;

      ②Although aluminum-air batteries contain high specific energy, their specific power is low;

      ③The charging and discharging speed is relatively slow, the voltage lags, and the self-discharge rate is large;

      ④ A thermal management system is required to prevent overheating of aluminum-air batteries during operation.

      The advantages and disadvantages of aluminum-air batteries compared with today's lithium-ion batteries are shown in the table below.
