According to reports, Ultra Electronics confirmed that the new fuel cell provided by the company can enable the Stalker unmanned aerial system (UAS) to increase the range by four times compared with using conventional fuel.
During a flight demonstration in May, the Stalker drone was equipped with a 2.6-kilogram fuel cell power capsule that produced 245 watts of energy. Lockheed Martin, the maker of the Stalker, hopes that the hand-launched UAS using fuel cells will eventually achieve a 24-hour endurance.
The fuel cell uses propane and a solid oxide and has an energy density of 1,200 watt hours per kilogram, which is four times that of lithium batteries. The fuel cell power module will soon undergo field testing and then enter the production phase.
