American researchers said in the new issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society that they have developed a safe and effective method to extract and store hydrogen, clearing obstacles for the promotion of the use of hydrogen fuel cells.
Travis Williams, an assistant professor at the University of Southern California who is responsible for developing this technology, said: "We have found a chemical method to extract and store hydrogen. This method can complete the extraction of gaseous hydrogen from borane ammonia, The complete process of converting gaseous hydrogen into borane ammonia for storage. This is a breakthrough in the field of hydrogen energy storage and has practical significance."
Borane ammonia is a non-toxic compound with a high hydrogen content. Earlier this year, Williams' research team developed a method to extract gaseous hydrogen from borane ammonia, but the disadvantage is that not enough hydrogen is released, and once the hydrogen is released, it is difficult to recycle it. .
Now, Williams and colleagues have developed a catalyst system using borane ammonia at its core that can release enough hydrogen to make it an efficient source of hydrogen energy. Unlike catalyst systems with borohydrides and metal hydrides as the core, this catalyst system is stable in air, lightweight, and reusable.
Currently, researchers are applying for patents on related technologies. Williams predicted: “In the near future, this technology will be applied to everything from motorcycles to aircraft.”
Hydrogen fuel cells do not release carbon and are considered an environmentally friendly product. As oil resources become increasingly scarce and expensive, scientists around the world have long begun to explore ways to use hydrogen to develop alternatives to fossil energy. But gaseous hydrogen is difficult to store and transport. Currently, automotive hydrogen fuel cells on the market generally use high-pressure or low-temperature storage methods, which are not only expensive but also pose safety risks. "If you have a full tank of (gaseous hydrogen) in your car and an accident occurs and the storage device is damaged, you're going to be in big trouble," Williams said.
