      However, due to low entry barriers and imperfect industry technology and safety standards, some domestic BMS products currently have problems such as uneven quality, missing functions, low accuracy, and poor safety, which have plagued the industry's progress.

      At the 2018 China International Automobile Trade Fair on October 15, Suzhou Zhengli NIO New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Zhengli NIO") launched a new generation of BMS products for the high-end passenger car market - Z-BMS. . It is understood that this product is built in strict accordance with the ISO26262ASILC grade standard and can meet the functional safety needs of most automobile manufacturers for automotive electronics.

      Zhou Nan, executive vice president of Zhengli Weilai, told Gaogong Lithium Battery that the company's Z-BMS products have been entrusted to TÜV Rheinland for testing and certification. The company is confident that it can obtain ISO26262ASILC issued by TÜV Rheinland before mass production in the first quarter of next year. Certificate.

      In fact, Zhengli Weilai, founded in December 2016, is considered a "new face" in the domestic BMS field, but why is its new generation product Z-BMS able to achieve high technical standards and strong capabilities in a short period of time? market competitiveness?

      According to reports, Z-BMS is a fifth-generation battery management system jointly developed by Zhengli Weilai and Lithium Balance specifically for the Chinese market. The main research team of Lithium Balance is from the Technical University of Denmark. It is a senior development company with ten years of BMS development experience in Europe. It has developed more than 150 projects in 32 regions around the world and has strong development capabilities. In 2017, Zenlead, the controlling shareholder of Zhengli Weilai, officially invested in Lithium Balance, aiming to integrate European and Chinese technologies and jointly develop China's new energy passenger vehicle market.

      Market attack supported by technology/resources

      Under the halo of the genes of an international technical team, Z-BMS has the dual blessing of international leading technology and domestic and foreign supply chain resources from the beginning of research and development. While maintaining technological advancement, the product's cost and price also show high market competitiveness.

      Lithium Balance CEO Lars Barkler said in an interview that compared with ordinary BMS products, Z-BMS has two major features: hardware and software. In terms of hardware, the company strictly follows the functional safety process and requirements for development and testing to ensure that the product reaches the ISO26262ASILC level standard when the product is officially mass-produced in April next year; the hardware has a service life of up to 15 years; the balancing current is large to ensure battery consistency. Thereby extending the battery life; the main chip is a TI32bit dual-core microcontroller, and the sampling chip uses LTC6811, both of which comply with functional safety level D.

      In terms of software, the product is developed based on the Matlab model, which is close to the efficiency of manual code execution. The software development process complies with ASPICE standards and can detect up to 300 faults.

      On this basis, Z-BMS performance data is extremely impressive. The actual measurement error of SOC estimation accuracy is less than 5%, the current detection accuracy is as low as 0.25%; the total voltage detection accuracy is as low as 0.25%; the temperature detection accuracy reaches ±1°C; the single unit detection accuracy reaches ±1.5mV...

      "At the same time, according to customers' different product data and customer requirements, the company can also develop and design through two sets of algorithms, one is ampere-hour integral + OCV + error verification algorithm, and the other is based on the battery chemical model + EKF algorithm . Maximize the error correction performance and detection performance of the product, and reduce the SOC estimation accuracy error." Wang Zhigang, BMS development manager of Zhengli Weilai, introduced.

      As subsidies in the domestic new energy vehicle market decline, pressure to reduce costs is transmitted upward. As a key component of power batteries, cost reduction has naturally become the main theme of the BMS industry. How to balance the leverage between product quality and cost has also become an urgent problem for manufacturers to solve.

      Lars Barkler said that the company has made sufficient preparations in terms of cost reduction: 1. The company has used one and a half years to realize the platformization of BMS hardware and software, significantly reducing the development cost and time cost of subsequent new products. ; 2. More than ten years of roots in the BMS field have allowed the company to have many strategic partners in the global automotive electronics supply chain, which can ensure a stable supply of spare parts materials and reduce procurement costs; 3. The company's BMS products are developed around the new communication standard isoSPI development to ensure its economy and good development prospects in the market.

      "In addition, the company's main research team is also cooperating with new battery materials to develop BMS applications, keeping the company's technical level at the forefront of advancing with the times for a long time." Lars Barkler emphasized.

      Comprehensive BMS/PACK/battery cell technology

      In fact, Zhengli NIO’s “ambition” for China’s new energy vehicle market goes beyond BMS. It has also completely failed in the field of PACK and battery cells.

      It is understood that Zhengli NIO is a joint venture established by Zenlead and Weiran (Nanjing) Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of NIO. Zhengli Weilai is positioned as a professional battery pack R&D and manufacturing enterprise integrating design and development, trial production testing, and production and manufacturing, of which Zenlead holds a 65% controlling stake.

      Zhou Nan said that following the Internet thinking, NIO and Zenlead had already signed an agreement when they cooperated, which did not restrict the joint venture company to only provide NIO with battery packs. This means that on the premise of ensuring the supply of NIO's production capacity, the joint venture The company is able to design and produce battery packs for vehicle manufacturers across the country.

      It is understood that in addition to establishing a joint venture with NIO, Zhengli NIO has also negotiated different models of cooperation intentions with automakers such as AIWAYS, Hanteng Automobile, and Qoros Automobile. At the same time, Zhengli Weilai's affiliated companies have cooperated with Toyota. With the integration of excellent resources, Zhengli Weilai's manufacturing site has also formed a Japanese management style and achieved comprehensive TPS lean production.

      Currently, due to the need to control core technologies and reduce costs, battery manufacturers and vehicle manufacturers are deploying the PACK market through self-development or acquisitions. Therefore, the living space of third-party PACK companies has been compressed. As a "rising star" in the PACK family, Zhengli Weilai has a very clear idea of its offensive line in the future market.

      The first is to enter into joint ventures with vehicle manufacturers and use the power of new vehicle manufacturers as a market breakthrough. Take the cooperation with NIO as an example. NIO leads the design of battery products and processes, while Zhengli NIO is responsible for the installation of the production line and the development of the process.

      Second, Zhengli Weilai controls the design and development of the PACK process, and vehicle customers will find suppliers for trial production. In addition to providing satisfactory design solutions, Zhengli Weilai will also cooperate with the vehicle manufacturers until the model is mass-produced.

      The third is joint development with the vehicle manufacturer. The vehicle manufacturer proposes product requirements, and Zhengli NIO cooperates in development, supply selection and trial production. After approval, Zhengli NIO is responsible for production.

      Zhou Nan revealed that Zhengli Weilai has already formed a PACK production capacity of 38,000 units and is currently expanding production. It is expected to achieve mass production in the first quarter of next year. The new production line will be built into a benchmark product with flexibility and intelligence. Wire.

      It is worth mentioning that Zhengli Weilai is also actively involved in battery anode technology and hopes to cooperate with vehicle manufacturers/battery manufacturers through equity participation, technology licensing, etc. Through advanced pre-lithium technology and medium and high nickel cathode materials, a high-energy-density battery core with an energy density of over 300Wh/kg is created.
