Thermal management systems are of great significance to improving the efficiency of electric vehicles.
Gaogong Electric Vehicle has learned that in order to prevent the battery of its Kona model from overheating, Hyundai Motor is actively developing a special thermal management system and installing it on the US version of the Kona model.
The main reason why it is installed on the US version of the Kona model is that the US version of the Kona model currently only provides a 5.5kW resistive cabin heating system without battery cooling and preheating functions. In addition, in order to meet the existing market demand, Hyundai Motor will install an advanced heat pump system for Canadian customers for cabin heating and battery preheating.
When driving in cold climates, the U.S. version of the Hyundai Kona will use heat from the electric motor's powertrain electronics to heat the battery pack, as the model does not have a dedicated battery heater.
Since the starting price of Hyundai Motor's US version of Kona is US$36,450, if the US government's car purchase tax subsidy is included, the price of Hyundai Kona will drop to US$30,000. This time, the purpose of modern thermal management design is to reduce Kona's cost and improve its competitiveness.
From an industry perspective, the new energy vehicle thermal management system market is becoming a new blue ocean beyond the "core three-electric technology".
At present, the thermal management of new energy vehicles is still in its infancy. There are still few thermal management system manufacturers with integrated design capabilities on the market, and pure new energy vehicle thermal management integrated systems have not yet been truly applied.
It is worth mentioning that as global mainstream car companies pay more and more attention to improving the overall efficiency of electric vehicles and ensuring safety during use through temperature control, the thermal management system of electric vehicles plays an important role.
Internationally, in addition to Hyundai Motor, there are also major car companies such as Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, and General Motors, which have begun to increase their attention to vehicle-level thermal management in electric models. Domestically, there are BAIC, BYD Independent brands and new power car companies such as GAC, GAC, Geely, WM, and NIO also followed closely behind.
At present, most car companies have made a good layout and are striving to seize the commanding heights of the new energy vehicle thermal management system market.
