In terms of research progress among vehicle manufacturers, Toyota Motor is in a leading position with its strong technical experience accumulation: In September 2018, Toyota disclosed the framework of its all-solid-state battery and plans to achieve commercialization in the early 2020s.

The foundation of Toyota's all-solid-state batteries is technology that reduces the internal resistance of solid-state batteries. With this technology, Toyota has increased the energy output density (by volume) of all-solid-state batteries to approximately 2.5kW/L. At the same time, the energy density was successfully increased to 400Wh/L, which is twice the energy density of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries produced around 2010.

But the performance of Toyota's current all-solid-state batteries is far inferior to existing lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, Toyota is working hard to improve the performance of solid-state batteries so that they can be commercialized as soon as possible.

      South Korea:

Korean companies choose to team up to develop solid-state battery technology:

It was reported in November 2018 that South Korea's three major battery manufacturers LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SKI will jointly develop solid-state batteries, lithium metal batteries and lithium-sulfur batteries. In addition, they will establish a 100 billion won (approximately US$90 million) Fund to build the next generation battery industry ecosystem.

Samsung SDI has already exhibited solid-state batteries and battery modules based on 21700 cylindrical cells at the 2017 North American Auto Show; LG Chem itself also has plans for the research and development of solid-state batteries.

Vehicle manufacturer Hyundai Motor chose to invest in a materials technology company, Ionic Materials, a start-up solid-state battery materials company located in Massachusetts, to lay out solid-state batteries and promote the development of battery technology. Industry insiders revealed that Hyundai is conducting research and development of solid-state batteries through the battery R&D team under the Namyang R&D Center. It has achieved a certain technical level and is expected to achieve mass production of solid-state batteries in 2025.

      Germany:

The German government has provided financial support for solid-state battery research and development.

According to foreign media reports, in order to reduce the dependence of German car companies on battery suppliers from China, Japan and South Korea, German Chancellor Merkel will plan to allocate 1 billion euros to support a battery manufacturer in Germany and will also fund a battery research and development institution. For the development of next-generation solid-state batteries.

BMW: On the one hand, BMW is building its own battery cell R&D center to develop solid-state battery technology and is expected to achieve a breakthrough in solid-state batteries in 2026 and then mass-produce it. On the other hand, BMW is also actively cooperating with Solid Power on solid-state batteries to rapidly improve its battery research and development capabilities.

Volkswagen: The veteran automobile manufacturer Volkswagen has previously announced that it plans to independently produce solid-state batteries. Mass production may begin in 2024 or 2025, and the factory may be built in Europe or Germany. In addition, Volkswagen also received permission from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to invest US$100 million in the battery technology company QuantumScape, becoming the largest shareholder of QuantumScape and increasing its stake. QuantumScape has more than 200 solid-state battery technology patents and patent applications, which will provide strong assistance to the public in the research and development of solid-state batteries. The goal is to establish a solid-state battery production line by 2025.

      USA:

In October 2018, Fisker announced that its new solid-state lithium battery takes only 9 minutes to charge and will be mass-produced. Since then, the company's solid-state battery technology has received investment from heavy machinery manufacturer Caterpillar, but the specific amount of investment has not been disclosed. Fisker said the patent-pending Fisker flexible solid-state battery costs less than $100 per kilowatt hour and can be used in the construction, energy storage, transportation and mining industries. Commercialization is expected to occur between 2018 and 2033.

      U.K:

In October 2018, Ricardo announced that it would cooperate with 4 institutions/enterprises to carry out the PowerDrive Line project, with the purpose of establishing a pre-test line for solid-state batteries and developing processes for the solid-state battery material supply chain.

Project partners include Ilika technologies, the British Center for Process Innovation, Honda R&D Europe and University College London.

      Australia:

In October 2018, Australia's Magnis Resources Limited announced that its partner C4V (Charge CCCV) had produced a prototype of a solid-state battery. The prototype battery capacity is currently 380Wh/kg and 700Wh/L, and is expected to be further optimized to 400Wh/kg and 750Wh/L. The new battery reduces production costs and eliminates the need for cobalt metal, reducing constraints.
