Charging for a few minutes and driving hundreds of kilometers may no longer be a dream.

According to US media Axios, GBatteries, a start-up company specializing in battery technology, said that they have cracked the "code" that allows lithium batteries to be charged faster. It only takes 5 minutes of charging to make a car equipped with a 60kWh lithium battery run. 119 miles (approximately 192 kilometers).

Typically, a 5-minute charge with existing lithium battery technology is only enough to allow an electric vehicle to travel 15 miles (approximately 24 kilometers).

This means that if the latest technology from Canadian company GBatteries is implemented, existing lithium batteries are expected to be half charged in 5 minutes and fully charged in 10 minutes, which is about the same as the time it takes to fill a tank of gas in a gasoline car.

Battery technology is one of the key bottlenecks restricting the development of electric vehicles. Even Tesla, one of the industry leaders, has limited technology. Its Model S and Model X have a maximum range of about 80 kilometers per hour of charging.

In other words, GBatteries' technology is expected to make electric vehicles a mainstream product in the automotive industry by promoting advances in battery charging. The key is to break through a major obstacle to ultra-fast charging of lithium batteries: electrode damage. Once electrode damage occurs, the life expectancy of lithium batteries will be reduced.

GBatteries uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help optimize battery car charging systems. Kostya Khomutov, one of the founders of the company and a special aerospace engineer, said:

Most companies focus on developing new battery chemistries or battery materials to increase charging speeds. It is very difficult to develop new materials, and it will cost billions of dollars to match the corresponding charging technology improvements according to the needs of car companies. Our technology combines software algorithms with the electronics industry and applies them to existing lithium batteries.

"This technology is combined with off-the-shelf lithium-ion batteries and existing fast charging infrastructure, integrated through a patented self-contained adapter on the car's charging port." GBatteries introduced its technology at this year's CES show.

Most charging systems rely on fairly primitive systems such as the constant current constant voltage (CCCV) charging method to charge, and various factors, including temperature, can slow or stop charging. GBatteries manage this by setting a very specific charging mode that can "slow down" and "speed up" charging as needed. This allows for faster charging under the right conditions.
