Causes and solutions for UPS battery bulging and explosion. Since people do not know much about the use of batteries, there will be some mistakes in the use of batteries. Improper use of UPS power batteries, especially overcharging, can cause problems such as blocked vents and aging circuits, which may lead to safety hazards such as explosions, fires, bulges, etc. So how to control battery explosion? The editor of this article will share it with you.

      Reasons for battery swelling

      1. Ventilation hole blocked

If the vent hole on the battery filling cap is clogged or blocked, the gas generated when the charging time is too long or the charging voltage is too high will gradually accumulate, causing the pressure inside the battery case to increase, eventually causing the battery to bulge.

      2. Charging time is too long

When the UPS battery charging current is too large or the charging time is too long, a large amount of gas will be produced. In addition, excessive current or long charging time will cause the temperature of the electrolyte to rise rapidly, which can easily cause the battery to bulge.

      3. The battery plates are vulcanized

If the plates of the UPS battery are vulcanized, the cell voltage and electrolyte temperature will rise rapidly during the charging process, bubbles will be generated earlier, and the reaction will be violent, which will easily cause the battery to bulge.

      4. The inner plate tabs and poles of the battery are not firmly welded to the busbar.

When the tabs and poles of the battery's internal plates are not firmly welded to the busbar, and a large current is discharged, the welding joint will cause sparks and ablation due to too thin contact points or poor contact. Sparks will appear and the battery will be destroyed. The resulting mixture of hydrogen and oxygen ignites, causing the battery to explode.

      5. The viscosity of the electrolyte is too large

If the viscosity of the electrolyte is large, it will easily penetrate into the pores of the electrode plate slowly, which will also increase the internal resistance. In this way, the voltage drop consumed on the internal resistance during discharge will also increase. This will cause the temperature of the electrolyte to rise rapidly and produce a large amount of gas, which will increase the gas pressure inside the battery and cause the battery to bulge.

      6. The amount of electrolyte is too small

I believe everyone knows that the electrolyte of a battery will decrease after being used for a period of time. At this time, electrolyte or distilled water needs to be added. If the electrolyte is reduced and overcharged, the battery will bulge and even cause an explosion.

      Causes of UPS battery explosion

●The UPS battery is charged to the end, and after the two poles are converted into effective substances, if it continues to be charged, a large amount of hydrogen and oxygen gas will be produced. If the internal pressure is too high, it will cause an explosion. In the case of overcharging, if there are virtual solder joints in the internal poles, wall welding, etc. of the UPS battery, the battery has a higher chance of explosion. If the battery exhaust hole is clogged, the battery will burst first. The explosion will cause the battery to vibrate. If the pole wiring is not secure, sparks will occur, which may also lead to an explosion.

●The internal pressure of the battery is too high, causing the battery shell to explode. The pressure inside the UPS battery will rise very high, which will first cause the battery tank to deform. When the internal pressure reaches a certain level, it will burst from the joint of the battery tank cover or other weak points. This is a physical process. When the internal pressure of the battery is higher than 0.25MPa, the battery will burst. The burst location is located at the hot air junction of the tank cover or the corner where stress is concentrated.

●The battery explodes when hydrogen meets an open flame. The explosion limit of the mixed gas of H2 and O2 is H2 accounting for 4%-96% of the volume of the mixed gas. The explosion limit of the mixed gas of H2 and air is H2 accounting for 4%-74% of the volume of the mixed gas. %. If 80% of the overcharge capacity is used to electrolyze water, the H2 content inside the battery is greater than the explosion range. When the hydrogen content in the UPS battery or in the air accumulates to the explosion limit, an explosion will occur when encountering an open flame.

●Because the battery exhaust hole is blocked, the battery bursts first. The burst causes the battery to vibrate, and the pole wiring is not secure enough to generate sparks, resulting in an explosion.

How to prevent UPS battery explosion?

      1. Control the charging amount but not overcharge to reduce the amount of gas evolution. In the charging room, open flames are strictly prohibited and ventilation is maintained.

      2. During charging, the wiring points must be firm to avoid sparks caused by looseness.

      3. Low voltage constant voltage charging is used during use, so the amount of gas evolution is small.

      4. Prevent cracks in the battery shell, electrolyte penetration, and penetration into the cable trench, causing short circuits, sparks, and fire and explosions.

      5. Although the maintenance-free battery is sealed and equipped with an exhaust valve, a certain amount of hydrogen and oxygen gas is stored inside the battery. Once the exhaust valve fails or becomes inoperable and the internal pressure is too high, the battery will rupture or even break. Explosion, fire. Therefore, the exhaust valve must be kept reliable.

      6. Breathable: Release the gas generated during the operation of the UPS battery, balance the pressure difference inside and outside the battery case, and prevent explosion.

Solutions to UPS battery bulges and explosions

During the charging process, make sure that the wiring points are firm, because loose wiring points will produce sparks, which will cause hidden dangers for the UPS battery to bulge.

Control the voltage and current. As mentioned above, excessive voltage or current can easily cause the UPS battery to bulge, so the voltage and current must be controlled.

When installing the UPS battery, the tools that should be used should be insulated. When connecting, the electrical appliances other than the battery should be connected first. After checking that there is no short circuit, the battery should be connected finally. The wiring specifications should be well insulated to prevent rupture caused by overlapping pressure. .
