German battery manufacturer Akasol AG announced at the show that it is powering a new hybrid superyacht developed by an Italian company. The company's first-generation AKA System 15 OEM battery system can be used on ships. It is understood that the yacht can sail short distances with an electric cruising peak of 8 knots, and can be moored for up to 17 hours powered by a lithium-ion battery system. At the show, the company presented the second generation of its AKA System OEM PRC yacht, which provides 33% more energy than its predecessor.
Nidec Ansaldo Industrial Systems (Nidec ASIS.p.A.) also launched a new battery for the shipping industry at an exhibition in the Netherlands, promoting its development towards clean energy ships. The company's new battery is different from others on the market, with a special construction that has the potential to reduce the number of modules and converters per pack.
The chief executive of energy storage provider Leclanche has warned of gas emissions from ocean shipping, saying: "Ocean shipping alone is responsible for 13% of greenhouse gas emissions and, according to current projections, by 2050 if business as usual continues, Emissions are expected to increase by at least 50%."
One professional said that in the short term, the use of battery technology may be most effective in inland and coastal shipping, including ferries, passenger transport and small cargo transport.
