According to foreign media reports, Volkswagen has revealed the modular electric vehicle (MEB) platform, which will increase the annual production capacity of vehicle batteries to 500,000 units, divided into three different battery capacities. Small cars will use 48kWh and 62kWh versions of the battery, while larger vehicles will be equipped with 82kWh batteries. However, only the 82kWh battery comes with 125kW DC fast charging technology, while the other two versions offer 100kW charging equipment.
The cruising ranges provided by the three batteries are 330km, 450km and 600km respectively. Interestingly, the 48kWh battery is lighter than the 35.6kWh battery currently used in the Volkswagen e-Golf. Volkswagen expects this to be attributed to advances in lithium-ion batteries, which have improved the energy-to-weight ratio. The company predicts that between 2018 and 2025, the energy density of battery cells will increase by nearly 25%. At the same time, it is expected that solid-state batteries will be on the market by 2030. This type of battery may increase the energy density from the current 0.650kWh/L to 1kWh/L, an increase of 25%.
The cooling function of the battery is as follows: the refrigerant will flow along a set of channels under the solid metal plate, functioning as a heat sink, and used in conjunction with the thermally conductive adhesive of each cell module. The temperature of the battery module is monitored and the voltage of the cells is carefully considered to prevent battery overheating.
Volkswagen said that 100kW or 125kW DC fast charging will not affect the long-term degradation of the battery. Dr. Holger Manz, head of high-voltage systems in the company's energy management room, emphasized that Volkswagen has reserved 150kW and 350kW charging equipment for luxury cars and high-performance models, and has a conservative attitude towards fast charging technology.
