      According to foreign media reports, electric vehicles have always been affected by temperature changes, mainly because their lithium-ion battery electrolytes are susceptible to temperature changes. Now, researchers have developed a new electrolyte containing various additives that allows lithium-ion batteries to perform better over a wider temperature range.

      Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in mobile phones, laptops and electric vehicles. The electrolyte solution in the battery conducts ions between the positive and negative electrodes of the battery to power the battery. An essential ingredient in such solutions is ethylene carbonate, which helps form a protective layer that prevents the electrolyte components from further decomposing when in contact with the anode. However, ethylene carbonate has a high melting point, which limits its performance at low temperatures. Previously, researchers from the American Chemical Society have demonstrated that they can replace part of ethylene carbonate with propylene carbonate and add hexafluorophosphate to expand the operating temperature range of lithium-ion batteries. But the researchers hope to expand the temperature range further so that lithium-ion batteries can operate from minus 40 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius.

      The researchers tested the impact of five electrolyte additives on lithium-ion battery performance within this temperature range and determined the best combination of three compounds added to the previous electrolyte solution. The new compound combination formed a highly conductive, uniform layer at the anode and cathode. and a solid protective layer. Batteries containing such optimized electrolytes have enhanced discharge performance at minus 40 degrees Celsius, significantly improved cycle stability at 25 degrees Celsius, and slightly improved cycle stability at 60 degrees Celsius.
