Posco and Posco Chemical of Korea Steel Group have established a special research center to develop battery materials with the support of the entire group. The move highlights Posco's active efforts to cultivate electric vehicle battery materials as the next key point for industry growth.
POSCO and POSCO Chemicals held a ceremony recently to open a research center at a laboratory at the Pohang Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) in the Southeast Industrial Port. The center will initially be managed by 84 researchers from Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology and Pohang Chemical, and more personnel will be recruited later.
South Korea's Posco establishes dedicated research center to develop battery materials and technologies
The center will actively conduct joint research with domestic and foreign research institutions to ensure competitive advantages in the field of secondary battery materials. The project will be equipped with relevant facilities to develop high-capacity cathode and anode products, new battery material technologies, and key material technologies for next-generation batteries. In addition, the center will also establish relevant facilities for battery production performance evaluation to actively respond to various business needs.

In fact, Posco has already invested heavily in lithium-ion battery materials. In February last year, Posco decided to purchase battery-grade lithium from Australia's Pilbara Minerals. The two companies will jointly build a factory to produce 30,000 tons of lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate per year from 2020; In August of the same year, Posco signed a US$280 million agreement with the Australian Galaxy Resources mining company to acquire the latter’s mining rights to produce lithium materials in Argentina’s Hombre Muerto Salt Lake; three months later, Posco Iron has completed the upgrade of a factory with an annual output of 24,000 tons of lithium-ion battery cathode materials, and broke ground on the construction of a factory with an annual output of 50,000 tons of cathode materials; in November last year, the Korean media TheKoreaHerald reported that "Pohang The chemical industry will gain 20% of the global anode materials market share and achieve a revenue target of 17 trillion won in the next 12 years."
South Korea's Posco establishes dedicated research center to develop battery materials and technologies
It can be clearly seen that South Korea has accelerated its deployment in the battery field in the past two years, and the cancellation of my country’s power vehicle “white list” also heralds the increased ambition of Japanese and Korean power battery companies to enter the Chinese market. In addition, European and American self-built With the ambitions of battery factories, companies from all over the world will compete more fiercely for battery resources in the future, and overseas markets have become a hot spot for battery companies around the world, especially those in China, Japan and South Korea.
