According to foreign media reports, Germany's SGL Carbon recently announced that it has cooperated with Chinese automaker NIO to develop a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) battery casing prototype for electric vehicles.
At present, most power battery pack casings for electric vehicles are made of aluminum and steel. In comparison, CFRP battery casings are about 40% lighter than previous traditional materials, have high rigidity, and have a thermal conductivity 200 times lower than aluminum. .
Sebastian Grasser, Automotive Segment Manager of SGL Carbon’s Composites – Fibers & Materials Division, said: “In addition, the composite material also performs well in terms of water tightness, air tightness and corrosion resistance.”
The base plate and lid of the battery box are made from a sandwich core and several layers of carbon gel. The production tooling for the base plate and lid was designed by SGL Carbon's Lightweight and Application Center for this purpose. Carbon fiber for similar parts is produced at SGL plants in Moses Lake, Wash. and Muir of Ord, England. It is processed into coarse cloth at the SGL plant in Wackersdorf, Germany; and then at the SGL plant in Ried im Innkreis, Austria. Production of base plates and covers, as well as assembly of individual components.
Battery packs using this material can not only reduce a certain amount of weight for NIO's electric models, but also make battery swapping more convenient. It is understood that the replacement can be completed within three minutes at the NIO battery replacement station.
