Germany is accelerating its plan to produce lithium batteries for electric vehicles.

Foreign media reported that the German Fraunhofer Association announced that its battery production research center (FFB) will be located in Münster and will be established at MEET (Electrochemical Energy Technology Center of the University of Münster). The project is funded by the German federal government with a capital of 500 million euros.

“MEET’s expertise in battery materials and cell development and RWTH Aachen University’s expertise in cells and cell production complement Fraunhofer’s expertise in production technology and industrial transfer,” said Fraunhofer President Reimund Neugebauer. "Our aim is to create a production research center of excellence that intrinsically accelerates the innovation process for the production of new battery concepts and their large-scale production. When it comes to energy storage technology, time is of the essence."

According to the German federal government's plan, the FEB is supposed to improve conditions for battery production in Germany. The center will support the development of battery production lines. While the Fraunhofer Association is responsible for the planning and construction of research production, the industrial consortium will be responsible for the development and expansion of new production technologies.

These include battery experts BMZ Group, CustomCells, EAS Batteries, Leclanché and Liacon Batteries, TerraE and others. Following the research phase, the consortium hopes to win over investors and customers through large-scale production lines and industrialization platforms in order to facilitate the rapid establishment of battery production in Germany.

In order to put a label of Made in Germany and get rid of dependence on Asian battery manufacturers, the German government came up with the idea of establishing an electric vehicle battery production base in Germany. The German automobile industry also recognized that energy storage technology and batteries are an important part of the electric vehicle industry value chain. ring.

In 2017, the German government stated that it would invest 1 billion euros to support domestic companies in the research and development of electric vehicle batteries. In the same year, the Frankfurt, Germany company TerraE formed an alliance with 16 German companies to build a 34-gigawatt lithium-ion battery factory.

The project received 5.2 million euros ($6.2 million) in subsidies from Germany's education ministry and research authorities and is expected to require more than 1 billion euros before completion. The project will break ground in the fourth quarter of 2019 and reach full production in 2028.

In 2018, German Minister of Economy and Energy Altmaier promised that the German government would provide financial subsidies totaling up to 1 billion euros to the electric vehicle battery industry by 2021 to support preparations for investment in mass production of electric vehicles in Germany. Alliance for Automotive Batteries. The proposal has been approved.

Current members of the consortium are expected to include German battery manufacturer Varta, chemicals group BASF and automaker Ford. In addition, Volkswagen, BMW, Belgian raw material company Umicore, battery start-up Northvolt, and French battery manufacturer Saft are also in discussions.

Among them, BMW, Volkswagen, French PSA Group, BASF, Northvolt and other companies have submitted subsidy applications to the German Ministry of Economic Affairs.

In addition, the German government has also allocated US$1.2 billion for the development of solid-state battery technology in Germany.
