Germany is accelerating its plan to produce lithium batteries for electric vehicles.
Foreign media reported that the German Fraunhofer Association announced that its battery production research center (FFB) will be located in Münster and will be established at MEET (Electrochemical Energy Technology Center of the University of Münster). The project is funded by the German federal government with a capital of 500 million euros.
“MEET’s expertise in battery materials and cell development and RWTH Aachen University’s expertise in cells and cell production complement Fraunhofer’s expertise in production technology and industrial transfer,” said Fraunhofer President Reimund Neugebauer. Current members of the consortium are expected to include German battery manufacturer Varta, chemicals group BASF and automaker Ford. In addition, Volkswagen, BMW, Belgian raw material company Umicore, battery start-up Northvolt, and French battery manufacturer Saft are also in discussions.
