Now, researchers have invented a way to use ambient light to charge your phone, let’s take a look. Scientists from French solar company Dracula Technologies have developed a LAYER technology, which stands for "Light As Your Energy Response". Essentially, LAYER is a thin, flexible solar cell that can be made with an inkjet printer. These cost-effective, foldable sheets are made from a unique conductive plastic that harvests energy from the sun and artificial light, making the technology more versatile than many that have come before it. The LAYER can be printed on an electronic device, or a larger LAYER can be affixed to an object that captures more light, such as a backpack. The object is then connected to the device. "You could imagine printing it on a T-shirt and using it to charge your phone," Sadok Ben Dkhil, a materials physicist at Dracula Technologies, said in an interview. These solar cells only require an hour of use. Printing time can be customized based on shape, color, and even transparency. Although the researchers are still looking for ways to shorten the charging time of solar cells, they believe the technology is ready for real-world applications. "In the next few months, we should be able to charge smartphones," BenDkhil said in the interview.
