Professor Xia Hui of Nanjing University of Science and Technology collaborated with Chinese and foreign teams to pioneer structural design and control methods and made important progress in the research of manganese-based cathode materials, making low-cost sodium-ion batteries expected to replace lithium-ion batteries. The relevant results were published in the latest issue of Nature ·Communications. The specific capacity of the electrode made of this cathode material reaches 211.9 mAh per gram, while the specific capacity of the lithium battery cathode material currently on the market is about 140 mAh per gram. During the charge and discharge process, the structure of this cathode material is stable and has no phase change, with a volume change of only 2%. After 1,000 cycles of charge and discharge, the specific capacity retention rate is as high as 94.6%, while the general specific capacity retention rate standard in the battery industry is about 80 %.
Compared with lithium batteries, sodium-ion batteries have the advantages of abundant raw material reserves, lower costs, and better energy density and performance. They are an important development direction for future energy storage batteries. With the continuous promotion of sodium-ion research and development technology, the commercialization process of sodium-ion batteries is expected to accelerate, and companies that deploy in advance are expected to take the lead in the field of new energy battery energy storage.
