  • CR1225 battery.What if a lithium battery cannot be charged after being stored for a long time?

      We know that lithium batteries do not have the "memory effect" like nickel chromium batteries. Nowadays, we often see lithium batteries, and 18650 is also a type of lithium battery. After not using the battery for a long time, we will find that the battery cannot be charged anymore. This is due to excessive discharge, which means that the voltage of the battery is already lower than the cut-off voltage of the battery discharge, which is generally around 2.5V for general lithium batteries.

      What should be done with batteries that have not been used for a long time or have reached a very low discharge voltage, and can they still be activated? When it comes to activation, many lithium batteries do not exist as a single unit, but in the form of battery packs. Therefore, there is usually a charging management board, which mainly consists of a charging management IC. This IC has protective functions such as overcharging, discharging, overcurrent, and short circuit. For lithium batteries, a minimum limit is set for discharging, and placing the battery over discharging can cause irreversible reactions. That is to say, our battery cannot be charged after being stored for a long time. So sometimes you can try using the "activation" method.

      Lithium battery charging generally adopts a "constant current constant voltage" method, which means that at the beginning, it is charged with standard current for a period of time. When the battery voltage reaches the charging cutoff voltage, constant voltage charging is used. Therefore, it is possible to charge the battery with a DC power source for a period of time, and then switch to the original charger when the cut-off voltage is reached. Although this method is sometimes feasible, it is not always possible, as excessive discharge of the battery has already affected its performance. However, there are also phenomena where batteries that have been stored for several years can still be activated.

      So how to maintain a lithium battery?

      ① Due to the self discharge phenomenon of lithium batteries, if the battery is not used, in order to obtain long-term and intact storage, the battery voltage should not be lower than its cut-off voltage, preferably around 3.8 to 4.0V;

      ② It is recommended to charge the lithium battery once every six months to ensure that the battery remains above the cut-off voltage;

      ③ The temperature and humidity of the battery storage environment should be suitable and operated according to the specifications;
