Researchers at Shinshu University in Nagano, Japan, are developing a thin, large-capacity lithium battery that may open up a new research field in electric vehicle energy storage systems.

Lithium-ion batteries can store large amounts of electrical energy, but their storage capacity will diminish over time. To address this issue, Zettsu and colleagues examined the electrical and electrochemical properties of high-voltage (>4.8V, vs Li+/Li) cathodes as electrons enter the battery cells from the cathode.

Zettsu also uses self-assembled monolayers to adjust the surface of the battery, which may become a new research trend. His team coated the surface of the cathode with an ultrathin layer of fluoroalkyl-silane, a silicone material that arranges itself most efficiently to transport lithium ions and insulate electrons while retaining An atomic layer.

The researchers saw that direct contact between the cathode and the electrolyte was minimally reduced, and the battery's capacity did not fade even after hundreds of uses.

Zettsu said: "This self-assembled monolayer accumulation coating can reduce the activation barrier for lithium ion transport and stabilize ions near the surface, which will be affected by electrochemical reactions at the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. The surface stabilizing coating Surface stabilization coatings are an important technology for the development of high-voltage cathode materials, and there is no electrochemical performance shortcoming that makes it difficult to balance performance and stability."

However, Zettsu said the impact of surface coatings on the entire battery system still needs to be examined in detail to better understand any potential negative side-effects.

Zettsu plans to put the technology on the market in 2022, and Shinshu University will cooperate with car companies and lithium battery manufacturers to create more environmentally friendly high-energy batteries.

Zettsu said: "Due to the requirements of global environmental regulations, the global automobile industry is vigorously developing pure electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, which is a general trend. To this end, it is necessary to provide lithium-ion batteries with excellent performance for electric vehicles."
