Liquid flow batteries, also known as redox liquid flow batteries, are a new type of large-scale electrochemical energy storage device. Currently, there are many studies on liquid flow batteries, such as zinc bromide batteries and all vanadium liquid flow batteries. The theoretical shelf life of liquid flow batteries is infinite, with long storage life, no self discharge, and the ability to discharge 100% deep without damaging the battery. These characteristics make liquid flow batteries the preferred technology in the energy storage field.
Taking all vanadium flow batteries as an example, they can be instantly recharged by replacing the electrolyte. Compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries, all vanadium flow batteries have a longer lifespan. The lifespan of commercial lithium-ion batteries is generally 5-8 years, while the lifespan of all vanadium flow batteries can reach 20 years. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, their recycling treatment is simpler and has an advantage in terms of recyclability.
In 2013, the world's largest all vanadium flow battery energy storage system jointly developed by Dalian Rongke and Dalian Institute of Chemistry and Physics successfully passed the owner's acceptance. This is the world's first 5MW level large-scale industrial energy storage device that is actually connected to the grid, and all indicators are at the international leading level. In 2014, Dalian Rongke collaborated with Bosch Group to build an all vanadium flow battery energy storage system at a wind farm in northern Germany. In addition, Dalian Rongke also collaborated with UniEnergyTechnologies in the United States to build the first MW level all vanadium liquid flow energy storage battery power station in the United States.
Dali Electric has been focusing on the research and development of energy storage systems for all vanadium flow batteries for many years. As of now, the company has applied for 24 patents, authorized 17 invention patents, and established 7 company standards in the field of vanadium batteries. It has also carried out 12 vanadium battery energy storage system demonstration projects in China, India, Singapore, and other places, and its products are exported to countries such as South Korea and the United States. In February 2017, its self-developed modular vanadium battery energy storage system received its first annual order from South Korea. At present, the company has been supplying batteries to multiple energy storage projects in South Korea for two years.
The combination of all vanadium liquid flow energy storage batteries with wind and photovoltaic power to form off grid or microgrid power generation systems is a good green energy combination for remote areas with isolated islands and off grid.
