Correct Use of an Equalizer to Charge CR1220 battery

Stationary CR1220 battery are almost all lead acid and require some maintenance, one of which is an equalizing charge. Applying a periodic equalizing charge brings all cells to a similar level by increasing the voltage to 2.50V/cell, or 10% above the recommended charging voltage. An equalizing charge is nothing more than a deliberate overcharge to remove sulfate crystals that accumulate on the plates over time.

If not controlled, sulfation can reduce the overall capacity of the battery and in extreme cases render the battery unusable.

Equalizing charges also reverse acid stratification, where the acid concentration at the bottom of the battery is greater than that at the top. Experts recommend equalizing maintenance once a month and once or twice a year. A better method is to apply a fully saturated charge and then compare the specific gravity readings (SG) on the individual cells of a flooded lead acid battery with a hydrometer.

Equalizing is only applied if the SG difference between cells is 0.030. During an equalizing charge, check the change in specific gravity readings every hour and disconnect the charge when the gravity no longer rises. This is when further improvement is impossible and continued charging will have a negative impact on the battery. CR1220 battery must be kept cool and closely observed for abnormal heating and excessive ventilation. Some ventilation is normal, and the vented hydrogen gas is highly flammable. Battery rooms must have good ventilation, as hydrogen gas can explode at 4% concentration.

Equalization of VRLA and other sealed CR1220 battery requires calculation. Observing differences in battery voltage does not give a definitive solution, and good judgment plays a key role in evaluating the frequency and duration of service. Some manufacturers recommend equalization for 2-16 hours per month.

Most VRLA CR1220 battery vent at 34kPa (5psi), and repeated venting causes electrolyte depletion, which can lead to a dry condition. Not all chargers have an equalization charge function. If it is not available, the service should be performed using specialized equipment.
