Battery cell technology is the key to OEMs’ competitiveness
"When everyone's expectations for new energy vehicles are very high, the problem has actually been solved. At this time, more competition is among new energy vehicle companies, and one of the focuses of competition is cost." December 24th to 25th, The 7th China New Energy Vehicle Power Battery Summit 2017 was held in Qingyuan, Guangdong. At the meeting, Liu Minghui, Vice President of Xpeng Motors, made the following remarks. In addition, he emphasized that battery cells are a very critical technology for vehicle manufacturers. If car companies want to gain the competitiveness of complete vehicles, they need to do a lot of work with battery manufacturers.
Founded in 2014, Xpeng Motors is committed to becoming a global smart travel operator and manufacturer. The BETA version was officially released in 2016. In July 2017, the application information of Xpeng Motors' first model was exposed on the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. In October, the first mass-produced sample car rolled off the assembly line.
Liu Minghui pointed out that as an Internet electric vehicle, the key technologies are electrification, intelligence and informatization. Xpeng Motors pays great attention to power battery technology. At present, some core technologies have been mastered in the field of powertrain, including defining BMS systems based on the vehicle architecture.
In Liu Minghui's view, battery cells are a very critical technology for vehicle manufacturers. To gain vehicle competitiveness, we need to rely on differentiated competition. Whether it is lightweight car body, fast charging, or high and low temperature testing, it all ultimately comes down to battery technology.
"As an OEM, we must first master battery cell selection, put forward battery cell requirements in terms of driving range, power performance, charging time, etc., and jointly develop good battery cells with battery manufacturers." Liu Minghui said that currently some of the battery cells originate from traditional consumption. Electronic companies have not adapted to the adaptive development of electric vehicles as power batteries, especially cylindrical batteries, which requires car companies to do a lot of work together.
Regardless of battery life, cell safety, or module design, Xpeng Motors has done a lot of work. There are roughly two main ideas at present. First, the battery core is required not to undergo thermal control and strict standards are set. At present, the country's testing methods and standards such as extrusion all reflect this idea. While ensuring battery safety, this will hinder technological progress and make it difficult for some high-power, high-energy-density batteries to be applied; secondly, the battery cells are required to have appropriate safety, and again, we need to basically strengthen the relevant design and do a good job in the battery management system. To ensure consumer safety, this is also the idea adopted by some large international companies, and a lot of work has been done on integration.
