As we all know, lithium battery technology has reached a bottleneck period at this stage, and battery energy density has never been able to achieve a significant breakthrough. According to foreign media reports, SK Innovation stated that it will develop a new electric vehicle power battery, which is expected to increase the endurance of electric vehicles to 500km, and plans to commercialize it in 2021. At the same time, SK Innovation also stated that it will increase battery production capacity by at least 20 times in 2025.
At this stage, most of the ternary lithium batteries we know are made of three metal materials: NCM (nickel, cobalt, and manganese). At the same time, according to the different ratios of the three materials, NCM523 and NCM622 are the current mainstream solutions for batteries. The most bold battery ratio in China is the NCM811 battery launched by CATL. The ratio of nickel, cobalt and manganese metal materials reaches 8:1:1.
This time SK Innovation announced the development of a new generation of NCM batteries, with a ratio of three metal materials directly reaching 9:0.5:0.5. Obviously, the increase in the proportion of metallic nickel material means that the battery has stronger charging performance, and the battery energy density will further increase. However, as nickel is an active metal, an increase in the ratio represents a decrease in battery stability, which requires newer technology to ensure battery stability. At the same time, new batteries will also further increase the requirements for BMS systems. In addition, SK Innovation also plans to increase annual production from the current 4.7GWh to 100GWh by 2025. SK Innovation also proposed a new model of "battery as a service", covering battery production, sales and maintenance, leasing, charging and recycling.
In fact, Tesla's current battery technology has achieved a material ratio of 9:0.5:0.5, except that NCM (nickel, cobalt, manganese) has been replaced by NCA (nickel, cobalt, aluminum). It is still unclear whether the two batteries are stronger or weaker in terms of performance, but one is still a concept and the other has been mass-produced, so in terms of technical capabilities, Tesla is obviously better.
