AKASOL develops second-generation Nickel Metal Hydride No. 5 battery for Mercedes-Benz eCitaro

According to foreign media reports, German AKASOL will begin producing the first-generation battery system AKASYSTEMOEM for Mercedes-Benz electric buses eCitaro this fall. In addition, AKASOL has also worked closely with Daimler Buses to develop second-generation lithium-ion battery systems. By 2020, such upwardly compatible battery systems will increase energy supply by 35% and improve the range of electric vehicles.

Currently, each battery pack of the eCitaro has a storage capacity of 25 kWh, and each battery pack of the second-generation battery system will be able to store 33 kWh, which means that each vehicle can increase its battery capacity by 35%, from 243 kWh to 330 kWh, while maintaining the same structural space, weight and upward compatibility.

All thanks to AKASOL's flexible system architecture for customers. According to Daimler Buses, this technological leap, combined with other factors, will help increase the vehicle's range to around 200 kilometers, and ideally up to 250 kilometers.

In addition to improving the battery pack, minor optimizations such as the battery management system and the mechanical structure will help improve the second-generation battery system, said Sven Schulz, CEO of AKASOL.

Both generations of lithium-ion battery systems can be charged quickly (charging power up to 300kW) and can power other equipment such as air conditioning and electrical systems. In addition, the key factor for the robustness and durability of both generations of lithium-ion battery systems is that AKASOL uses water cooling to manufacture the battery system, which ensures stable tempering of the battery at 25 degrees Celsius, and the electric bus can operate in all climatic conditions. The high-performance battery is partly installed on the roof and partly on the rear of the vehicle.

For many years, AKASOL has been committed to developing and supplying various power systems for electric and hybrid buses. Buses using AKASOL battery technology are in daily operation in cities such as London, Berlin, Cologne and Brunswick.
