Many people believe that batteries need to be improved in two areas: battery life and capacity (how much power can be stored) to meet future needs. Most electronic devices use lithium-ion batteries, but another type of battery based on sodium rather than lithium may soon become commonplace. Both batteries can store and release large amounts of charge because their materials have unique ways of transporting electrons. However, over time, the storage capacity of lithium and sodium batteries will be significantly reduced during repeated charge, discharge and use cycles. There are several layers of metal materials in ordinary batteries. When the battery is charged and discharged, these metal layers will degrade and produce cracks or flakes, leading to stacking faults (stacking faults), thereby reducing the battery's ability to store and transfer charge. Stacking faults occur when such materials are held together by weak forces called VanderWaalsforce. Yamada and colleagues demonstrated that if the battery is made from a material called a redox layered oxide (Na2RuO3), the degradation of the battery's charge and discharge cycles is reduced and the metal layer repairs itself, and the researchers demonstrated The material is held tightly by coulombicattraction, which is much stronger than van der Waals forces. "This means that the battery will not only have a longer service life, but also the level of damage will be reduced," Yamada said. "Increasing battery energy density is crucial to realizing electrified transportation."
