High-power, self-cleaning solar panels may be coming to a rooftop near you. There are two most obvious problems with solar cells and solar panels: first, their surfaces are shiny, so that a considerable part of the light incident on the surface of the solar panels is reflected back to the sky without being converted into electrical energy; second, strong winds and rain The surface of the solar panels is dirty from washout, as well as dust and residual debris from birds. Current nanofabrication research published in an international journal shows that adding a nanoscale relief pattern to the surface of solar cells can effectively reduce reflection and increase efficiency, while making them highly non-stick and self-cleaning at the same time. Wang Zuobin of Changchun University of Science and Technology (China), Zhang Jin of Xi'an University of Technology (China) and their partners in the EU FP7LaserNaMi project have devised a method - photolithography - in which microelectronic circuits are "printed" on the surface of solar cells. A pattern. The pattern is characterized by being so small that individual parts are shorter than the wavelength of light. This means that incident sunlight is absorbed rather than reflected, and the energy absorbed inside the solar cell is converted into electricity. These same patterns make the surface of the solar cell water-resistant and hydrophobic, similar to that of a lotus leaf, with no droplets on the surface to stick to particles and liquids stuck on it. When it rains any deposits are removed and the rainwater is quickly and efficiently removed from the solar panel surface, allowing the solar panels to be clean and dry after a rainstorm. The team's work shows that a patterned layer on top of the active area of a solar panel can avoid energy loss due to surface reflections. This directly increases the absorption of light in parts of the visible and near-infrared spectrum, all of which contributes to increased photovoltaic efficiency of solar panels. The team said that printing on the surface of the solar cell enables the covered nanoscale cones to provide the best combination of non-reflective and hydrophobic properties of the solar panel, thus having a self-cleaning function.
