On the other hand, the technical level of power batteries continues to improve and the cost continues to decrease, which also provides support for the development of the electric ship industry. Currently, the single energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries used in electric ships has been increased from 100Wh/kg to 160Wh/kg, and the system energy density has also been greatly improved. In terms of price, the price of lithium iron phosphate batteries has dropped to 0.6 yuan/Wh, which is already economical in ship applications.
Based on safety and economy, lithium iron phosphate power batteries and BMS battery management systems have developed rapidly in recent years. The increase in charge and discharge rates has enabled ship startup acceleration and better power control. The technical conditions have been met for promotion and application on ships. "Lithium iron phosphate batteries have become the best choice for ship power batteries at this stage due to their high safety, long life, low cost, balanced performance and other advantages." Wu Kai, vice president of CATL, believes.
In fact, many power battery companies in overseas markets have begun to get involved in the electric ship market. Companies such as South Korea's Samsung SDI, Dutch energy storage and battery company LithiumWerks, and German battery manufacturer Akasol AG are all actively developing the electric ship market.
The "2015-2024 Global Electric Ships, Small and Autonomous Underwater Ships Market Report" released by the international market research company ResearchandMarkets predicts that due to factors such as good performance, affordable costs, legal prohibitions, etc., the electric ship market is experiencing rapid growth. It is expected that By 2024, the global electric ship market will reach US$7.3 billion, and the market prospects are considerable.
Domestically, urban ferries, sightseeing boats, inland river cargo ships, work boats, etc. along rivers and coastal areas are all expected to be partially replaced by electric vehicles. According to statistics from the Chinese Society of Shipbuilding Engineers, as of May 2019, the number of large-scale electric ships in operation and planned to be built globally is 155, of which 75 are in operation and 80 are planned to be built. In my country, only the Yangtze River and Beijing-Hangzhou The total number of ships in the canal exceeds 60,000, which shows that the market space is huge.
Although the electric ship market cannot be compared with electric vehicles in terms of quantity, it is worth noting that generally electric vehicles have a charge of 50-100kWh, while a ship can have a charge of hundreds or even thousands of kWh, and the demand is also very considerable. . For example, in November 2017, the world's first 2,000-ton pure electric bulk carrier had a battery capacity of approximately 2,400kWh, which is equivalent to the battery capacity of 40 BYD E6 "Pioneer" cars.
It is worth noting that despite the huge market potential of electric ships, electric ships are still in their infancy. Currently, the large-scale promotion and application of electric ships are still limited by the lack of relevant standards, imperfect charging facilities, limited power supply capacity of the grid, and unclear business models. question.
In fact, ships equipped with lithium batteries as power sources must be certified by the classification society’s lithium battery product technical standards before they can be used. It is understood that as of June 2019, there are only 11 domestic electric marine battery companies certified by classification societies, with more than 20 related certified products. The initial competition is still small, so many companies have already paid attention and got involved.
Lithium iron phosphate leading companies are pouring in one after another
"The battle to defend the blue sky will bring new opportunities for the electrification of new energy vehicles in the short term, but in the future the electrification of the shipbuilding industry that the country will promote will also have a huge market." Huang Shilin, vice chairman of CATL, once said bluntly. In fact, in January 2019, CATL signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the China Classification Society (CCS) Wuhan Standardization Institute in Fujian. The two parties will carry out strategic cooperation in various aspects such as promoting the research and on-water application of battery system ship technical standards, accelerating the recognition and inspection of related battery products, and further deepening all-round cooperation and exchanges on resource sharing, technical cooperation, and service upgrades. achieve intention.
In June of the same year, CATL revealed that the company had signed cooperation agreements with multiple parties in the field of electric ships. Among them, the Yangtze Three Gorges Navigation Administration's "Haixun 12909", the first pure electric official ship in the Yangtze River Basin, is equipped with CATL's lithium iron phosphate battery, with a capacity of 0.68MWh and a maximum speed of 21km/h.
The shipping field has been regarded by CATL as an important pole. Not only the domestic market, the company is also actively exploring the international market. In December 2019, CATL signed a framework agreement with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) on lithium battery application research in ships, officially entering the overseas ship market.
Another domestic company that is developing rapidly in the field of shipbuilding is Yiwei Lithium Energy. As early as 2016, Yiwei Lithium Energy's marine power battery obtained the China Classification Society CCS certification, and in 2019, it obtained the German Rheinland explosion-proof certification. As of December 2019, Yiwei Lithium Energy has installed more than 200 electric ships in the field of electric ships, which are used in scenic boats, riverside coastal ferries, sightseeing ships and inland river cargo ships, port tugs, river-sea intermodal bulk carriers, etc.
In June 2019, EVE Lithium Energy signed a cooperation agreement with Shanghai Hanshun Shipping Co., Ltd. to provide power batteries for 18 5,000-ton new energy bulk carriers of Shanghai Hanshun Shipping; in December of the same year, the company also signed a cooperation agreement with CSSC The Power Research Institute signed the "New Energy Power System Battery Product Cooperation Agreement" to jointly develop the field of electric ships.
This time, the subsidiary of Guoxuan High-tech has obtained a ship order, which also shows that Guoxuan High-tech has made breakthrough progress in the field of electric ships. Earlier, BYD also revealed that it intends to get involved in the field of electric ships. In March this year, LithiumWerks of the Netherlands, which has extensive experience in the fields of maritime and ship electrification, also settled its lithium battery project in China and invested in the construction of a 20GWh lithium battery project, aiming to target the Chinese electric ship market. It is expected that in the future, more battery companies, especially those focusing on lithium iron phosphate batteries, will focus on the field of electric ships.
It is true that the electric ship market has promising prospects, but it is different from the application scenarios of electric vehicles. The electric ship field also has special needs for batteries. "Problems such as the safety of high-power pure battery power, increased energy density, and high one-time cost will be difficulties in promoting the application of lithium batteries on ships." Some analysts pointed out that battery companies still need to cooperate with shipbuilding companies to strengthen technology Research and development, full testing and verification to ensure safe, reliable application and economy, paving the way for the development of the electric ship industry. As more and more lithium battery companies enter, the innovation and development of electric ship technology will also be accelerated. “As more and more companies with strong capabilities in the field of power battery R&D and production enter the field of ship power battery supporting and join forces with intelligent new energy ship technology innovation companies, domestic pure electric and diesel-electric hybrid and other intelligent new technologies will be further accelerated. The pace of energy ship technology innovation." said Hu Jianjun, general manager of Shanghai Guoxuan Wuyang Ship Technology Co., Ltd. ABB, Battery China Network
